Distichiasis

So sorry your baby is having to deal with this but glad you got an appt. It is one of the things looked for on Cerf testing, it is looked apon to be hereditary. My very first 'show dog' I purchased came up with it when I got her eyes tested, and I sent her back to the breeder, it was difficult. :(
Keep us posted on how things progress..

I'm so sorry to hear about Maia's eye :eek2: problems. It sounds painful and we wish you all the best in resolving the issue.

Ania, congratulations on getting Maia squeezed in. I will pray for you both that the surgery is simple, cheap, and goes well. Also for a fast and easy recovery.

Thank you. Maia's breeder is actually stepping up to the plate - she insists on paying for half, and if I don't have the money right now, she says she will pay for the whole thing and I can pay her back when I can.
I will let you know what the ophthalmologist says tonight.

that's awesome- I hope the ophthalmologist has good news too.

Well, I got in to see the vet earlier tonight. He said that the diagnosis is correct and that I was right in getting a second opinion and that the second vet was correct in not attempting to do the surgery himself. He said that cryotherapy, laser or electrotherapy would not really work, that the hairs usually grow back and significant scar tissue may form. What he will do, or another ophthalmologist at the hospital is do the surgery under a microscope and 'cut' the actual eyelash and follicles out, that way they do not grow back. I have to call on Monday and make the surgery apptmt. It is an 8 hour drive up to Saskatoon from here. He says that she will not have to stay at the hospital overnight, but that he would like to see her the next day, before I drive back and then again in December, when he comes back to Winnipeg for anther eye clinic. Otherwise, he said that her eyes were normal. Her right eye, the bad one, has 10 eyelashes growing on the inside of the eyelid, and the left eye, has 4 (I thought it only had one) - all 14 will have to be removed. I wonder if she will have to wear an eye patch?? on both eyes??? I will have to ask on Monday.

Oh my goodness. Thankfully you were smart enough to get a second opinion, and that they were willing to squeeze you in at the clinic. Poor little Maia!! Meggie and I are sending good thoughts your way!

We will be thinking of Maia tomorrow, and als oyou.Drive safely. Keep us informed of how ahe is doing~

Not sure about wearing patchs, but it is certain she will most likely be wearing a cone. They do make soft sided ones, thank you to Elaine for letting me know about them.As Earnhardt was sporting a cone back a while ago.

They're called Elizabethan soft collars.I ordered one from Drs. Foster & Smith.

Glad to hear that there is help for Maia and that you only have to make that long trip once. Isn't it amazing what we will do for these furbabies? Hope everything goes well with the surgery.
