Some years ago I had two friends die unexpectantly and without leaving any provisions for their dogs. Poor Inara was hit by a car while walking her Schnauzer and I had the unenviable task of looking for a new home for him. Let me tell you, it created a lot of animosity from people who wanted him. And it was lucky I knew Inara's vet because they helped me locate the sitter she had used. Then I had to get permission from her Executors. It was more difficult than you'd think. Same year a guy I knew from agility died of a sudden heart-attack when out swimming - not that old. His family didn't want his 6 BC so luckily the agility community stepped in.

I think any situation is hard, but the biggest problem is with an old dog or a dog with chronic illness. Even setting aside money for their upkeep, it's a big emotional commitment. For the younger ones it's a bit easier because I have connections in the dog world, just a shame to split them up. Guess I'll just have to keep living.

PS - and I better update things now Deska isn't around and Tully is old and infirm.

We basically decide when to get our last pet ; so that itєs very unlikely to out survve both my partner and me. But my much younger cousin who loves pets said just in case; accident etc; she would take our Sheltie. Somethig to think about when getting pets at older age really.

I’m 72 and hubby 70. Cooper now 2 will be our last furry kid. My 2 Ontario kids have both said they would always look after him if something were to happen to us that we could no longer care for him. My son did add could you work more on his barking before this is needed!!:ROFLMAO::) If for some reason God forbid we lose Cooper early in his life we would rescue an older Shih Tzu. I think dogs keep you moving and healthy. Our neighbor lost her Sheltie in November she is 93 and walked Sasha twice a day...she has no walker and only used a cane in winters bad weather. Morbid talk I guess, but it’s a fact of life...may we and our furry kids live long lives!!
