Do your male Shelties.....

Chelsea did. She'd catch scent of something, squat and mark it, and then scratch. Moreso as she got older for some reason. When she was young, she didn't do it.

April doesn't do anything like that at all.

Both of them have been spayed.

Vash is 7 months old now, he got neutered last month. He doesn't even raise his leg when he goes potty, he takes a stance that looks like the Lion King raises his back tail and just goes.

He hasn't started to kick up the dirt yet either ;)

Sounds just like Spencer. Back legs spread apart, tail raised and off to one side. No dirt kicking at all though.

My understanding is that dogs have scent glands on the pads of their feet and that the ground-scratching is just one more way of "marking". Understandably, it's more of an intact-male thing. They seem to really relish it, though!

Beckon sure does! I think it makes him feel macho.

Riley (6 months) pees like this too, except he learned to lift the back left paw up a little when he pees from another male dog. It's hysterical since he doesn't try to pee on anything but the grass and hasn't begun to mark anything on our walks and yet he insists on lifting that one paw in the air like he's afraid of peeing on it or trying to be 'manly'. He's off to be neutered next week so hopefully he doesn't start any other scenting behaviors.....

My husband thinks that this is Riley's attempt to be more 'male' since he's not the most manly of dogs....:uhoh::rolleyes2:

Justice(intact) didn't raise his leg to pee until he was 3yrs old. Thats when he was around his first in season girl and suddenly he turned into a puffy strutting rooster compete with leg lift.

Che at 10 1/2 months/ intact/ does not scratch. He lifts his leg at pretty much all neighboring trees and such, especially at the pooch park, and especially to make a point to pee over most other dogs. He is not territorial in his behavior around the house though, he lets Sammy have first chewy and take his toys.

Indy does a "token" lift of his leg (about 1 inch off the ground). But I don't think it's for marking. I think its to keep his feet dry. Bacca still squats like a girl. David's been trying to teach them the "manly" acts, but they just don't seem to catch on.

The only time the boys seem interested in kicking up poo, is if its mink poo! Then they don't just kick it up - they roll in it. :rolleyes2:

Yes! Joey scratches with all 4s every time after he pees and poos. He really goes at it! He also has to have his privacy before he will go...

Bailey, my girl, never does it. However, she spins round and round and round, starting with big circles and then getting smaller and smaller until she finally squats. She makes me dizzy just watching her. :wink2:

It's funny how very different they are when it comes to bathroom behavior! :rolleyes2:
