Do your male Shelties.....

My understanding is that dogs have scent glands on the pads of their feet and that the ground-scratching is just one more way of "marking". Understandably, it's more of an intact-male thing. They seem to really relish it, though!

Funny you should mention this. Grizz did it just today first time I've ever seen him do it. He is intact and about 16 months old. I had him, Justice(intact male),Pike(neutered male), Kramer(9wk intact male), Ember(spayed female) and Diva(intact female who just came out of season) with me on a walk in the woods along the edge of my friends property.

Diva peed near a bush, Grizz came up and peed over the spot and scratched, Justice the alpha dog walked up behind Grizz and peed over his pee and the spot he scratched but didn't scratch himself. He did throw Grizz a look as he walked away. Like "I don't think so young man" LOL

I've never had a dog that scratched after going but I have had 2 females who lifed their legs.

hmm none of mine do this..Ive seen my aunts terriers do this though both males and females..although than again I do have Noah who half way though peeing you see the light bulb go on and he goes ohhh yea and the leg gets lifted:lol::rolleyes2: he cracks me up!!

Mya does it after she poos....she doesn't use her back feet. She uses her front right paw to give the grass a few good swipes.

Yep. That's why they dont actually have to scratch right on top of the piddle, just nearby - they just use the scent pads in their feet to spread their smell around. Mind you, a friend's PBG (Margot) likes to throw the scent around. We have all learnt not to stand behind Margot when she does a poop, or when her other bitch (a rescue) does a poop because Margot piddles on that and then kicks her poop around too.:rolleyes2:

Sasha does the scratching bit...using all four and not necessarily associated with going potty. She'll bark at whoever she's sassing, and then stamp and scratch her feet

I've seen many male dogs do it before, one is a sheltie. But not Romeo. He'll pee over where that dog had marked but won't scratch up the surface. I read males do it to distribute the scent more, or something like that. In any case, I've learnt not to stand behind a male like that. I've had dirt and leaves kicked up at me before!!!

EDIT: PEED ON dirt and leaves, no less!!

As Caro said,I've seen this time and again with females.I know Eric's chihuahuas do it all the time.He calls it thier mexican kookaracha~

Trapp will also do it,after he pees.Jasper has just started lifting his leg.I am sure he is thinking that blade of grass is just as good as anything that stands upright. He's just getting the hang of things~To funny to watch him,he almost topples over when the leg goes up.
