Do Your Shelties Ever Mind the Cold?

Mine thrive on the cold - I have trouble getting them in, particularly if there is snow (they think they have a huge bowl of ice cream). It is not as cold where I live in the Niagara area now as when I lived north of Toronto. Even then my Hamish didn't want to come in.
 
I can't stand the cold - but Hanna loves it, and especially the snow! We didn't get any colder than minus 17 or 18 ( that's about 0, farenheit) last winter and she was great outside. I did buy her a coat but she hasn't worn it much.
 
Dickens is much happier outside in the cold than in the heat. The size of the dog may have something to do with cold tolerance. Smaller animals throw off more body heat, because they have a greater proportion of surface area, from which heat is lost. Another factor would be coat density; yet another, body fat.

Dickens hates baths, and he refuses to swim, but oddly enough, he doesn't seem to mind being out in the rain. Maybe that's because he can tolerate water on his outer coat, but doesn't like being soaked through.
 
Honey plays more in colder weather than warmer. Once we're 65 and below she's thrilled. Ideal for her seems to be 30-40. She'll lay outside on the deck looking happy as a clam.

Last year she showed a dislike of the more extreme temperatures and seemed more sensitive to cold in general. We'd go out to play, she'd get off the deck and would be running towards the trees for some good old fashioned squirrel barking, and would suddenly drop into a sitting position and hold her front paws up. With the most pitiful look ever of course.

If she had to go to the bathroom she'd get it done as fast as possible and mad dash back to the warm house.

Even on the days when it wasn't single digits and we'd risk a walk, she'd get tired of it and start pawing at me to carry her home.

Then again, that dry biting cold last year was enough to make anyone's bones ache. I know the year before that even on the days when they warned about letting the dogs be outside for more than a few minutes she showed no response to it.
 
The colder the better for Shelby. Both her and DH love the cold winter and the snow.

She hates the heat. She gets so mad when we turn the heat on and if we turn the fire place on she leaves the room! In our camper she stays as far away as she can from the heat vents. Definitely a cold weather girl!
 
Watson doesn't mind the cold, unless it's REALLY cold... last year's polar vortex temps he didn't even really mind. I noticed he was a bit stiffer and he didn't like it so cold on his feet... pulling the sad pooping tripod act when it was in the -20s. He loves the snow though and it becomes a huge problem because he would rather romp and play rather than do his business.
 
Jester does not like to be outside really unless it is 3 AM and extreme of temperature do not make it easier as far as he is concerned.

Fox likes being outside....even if there is a dry patch to lay down he goes and lays in the snow. So I would have to say cold weather doesn't bother him unless it is really really cold. He doesn't mind rain either. Wind on the other hand bothers him....he wants in if the wind picks up.
 
Emmy and I went for a walk last night in the super cold weather. We liked it...but were prepared!

Anyone ever have problems keeping their sheltie warm indoors? I had someone make that comment to me last night. I kinda think that's unlikely unless the dog is very aged or there is some underlying health problem. I've occasionally wondered what the house feels like to Fasb (feels cold and drafty to me). I worry that he'll get chilly in the winter.

It was mid-20's with a windchill in the teens this morning. Fasb didn't want to come in. He was more interested in eating bits of snow off the leaves and rolling around in the grass, so I'm guessing he's not cold.
