Drontal - Bad reaction?

Poor babe! Gosh t ohave such a terrible night in her crate,I'm sure it upset her as much as it did you.

Tapeworms are not fun, although I have never had any in my pups(fosters)or Earnhardt for that matter. I had first hand experaince with our blind babe Bumper. She got a shot right in the vets office the day they tested her.And no adverse reactions.

Was the drontal a one-time deal? Or does she have to have follow-up medicine? I certainly would not give it to her again without consulting the vet.

And as Ariel says: If she's not drinking water and pooping again soon; or the poop is still diarrehea, then I would call the vet, just in case.

You can certainly offer food, but don't be concerned if it takes a couple of days for her appetite to come back.

Good luck!

yes it was a one time pill. Right now she is napping peacefully in her crate.
I'm not sure if it was roundworm or tapeworm. From my description the vet thinks it was roundworm. I haven't seen any more worms since that one time on Monday.

I'm really nervous about worm eggs in her crate or on my carpet. any recommendations on how to properly clean her crate and carpet?

But, there is no doubt, Jessica (Smudge) has the BEST worm story. :biggrin2:

I don't want to have the best worm story! I don't want to have the best mange story, either!

I don't know about roundworms. I'm sure they're completely different than tapeworms. For tapeworms, I just vacuumed the carpet really good, and used lysol on any surface (including his crate). I threw out all of his toys, and anything that I decided to keep I washed. Twice. Also, I made sure I got some good flea spray for the carpet. Take care of the fleas or the tapeworms will come back.

Somebody else should answer the cleaning question for roundworms though. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to Lysol anything you could and wash the toys. I know nothing at all about roundworms, hookworms, or heartworms.

is it safe to use lysol in the crate? what if she licks the crate? I don't think she has fleas. how would i know?

Yes ive had that reaction with drontal, however with that being said it was the only medication that worked on Giardia (after 5 months of trying every other med out there for worming). And knowing full well what happens I would do it again to cure them. It was worth the 24-48 hours worth of hell to get it cleared up! I also used kaopectate with it and it kept the diarrhea down a bit...Talk to your vet about using kaopectate with it next time since they should have you do a follow up dosage to make sure it is cleared up and there isnt a re-infect.

Just saw the Lysol comment Lysol is toxic to animals. If you do use it make sure to wash it extremely well so its all off. You can use either a bleach mixture (which I prefer) or an ammonia mixture.

I thought Giardia was different from worms? I know of a couple of dogs that have experienced Giardia from drinking puddle water while on walks.. It doesn't take much of it either.. Are there worms associated with Giardia?

I'm very paranoid right now. Because she defecated in her crate and stepped in it. I'm just so nervous about my family or other dogs contracting it. I cleaned her feet with some soap and water, but according to my google search the only thing that kills the eggs is extreme heat. This is so scary and it's making me very paranoid

yes you are correct giardia is a parasite not a worm, however they are now finding that some forms of giardia are growing restistant to the " normal" course of wormers used to treat it, they normally use panacur which is a wormer to treat however certain strains of Giardia are not even touched by Panacur anymore, I almost lost one of my puppies to Giardia its really a nasty little bug! It took her just over a year to fully bounce back from it although it still had taken an effect on her body and robbed it of so much im sure I will continue to see the after effects of it the rest of her life.
