Ears up or down

With my first Sheltie I just assumed her ears didn't tip because of genetics. With the second one her ears started coming up. When I finally found out you really needed to tape/glue them it was really too late to get good results. I would rather her ears both be pointed, instead of the possibility of one up and one down.

With the current pup, I started out with a quest to get this dog's ears to tip. One thing with the internet, you can google and learn. The breeder gave me a lesson, and her brand of glue and remover. The men in my household thought I was being mean to the dog. (They're big softies when it comes to the dog.) But in any case, I persisted and she has a fairly good set of ears.

On the down side, I think tipped (folded) ears are harder to groom. Where I have issues is the back of the ear past the fold. Trying to get a clean line from the ear into the back of the neck. With prick ears it's basically clip around the line of the ear, if so inclined. So when we do our weekly nail grinding and foot hair clipping we also do touch ups on the ears.

But the little ears bouncing as we prance along on our walk are just so cute.:yes:
 
Cece's changing ears...

Has anyone had this happen, CeCe's left ear has decided to tip after all, she is about 18mos. They were bothed tipped as a puppy, then one went up, then the other pricked, and they stayed that way for a while. now the left one has tipped. Can I hope for the other ear to tip as well? She is adorable, one ear up and the other floppy. Some one tolded me it all had to do with breeding, but I don't know...
 
Oh, don't get me going on ears again! Any chance that Bacca's ears will suddenly stand up at 18 months! I wish! :rolleyes2:
 
New with sheltie

We recently got our first sheltie. From 2 months when we first got her to 4 months her ears were naturally tipped. Now at 4 months they are pricked. Is there a chance that as she gets older they would go back to being tipped or do we need to consider gluing them if we want tipped ears?
 
I would glue...but carefully! I made alot of mistakes with Bacca. I expect that I put the break too low and should have braced longer between the ears.

I got overzealous with the glue one day and had to cut so much of it out between his ears, I couldn't glue again for weeks. The rest is history! (Bacca, You ain't nothing but a hound dog!)

i would say its a 99% chance they wont tip by themselves again. Glue/tape them down now if you want them to stay down. otherwise they will be prick ears :smile2:
 
i gave up on the whole ear thingy.
it was very frusterating, his ears just didnt want to stay down, and it didnt help when he'd pick at them and shake his head alot.
I tried fabric glue---was too messy
I tried Tape----would pull his hair out
I tried gum-----it got everywhere in his hair

I gave up, he got too big anyways to become show quality, so why bother with it
 
I love the tipped ears so glued Titan's here and there but not vehemently. They mostly tip now but he's only 9 months old so we'll see how it goes.

I used fabric glue and, yeah, it's messy but it works. I let it grow out then cut it off after awhile. He's not a show dog so it doesn't matter. I just love tipped ears on him - it really suits him well.

My minpin has one ear up, one ear down and the other has both ears up so we have all three here :winkgrin:
