Fat Shelties

lol

But have brought some eqipment in and we are definitely doing a lot more exercises :D

Sister Mary Frances!

Well, I did the mega vet trip. The weigh-in was dismal. I cannot even imagine how bad it would have been had the gang not been on a diet for the preceding four weeks! My vet agreed that yes, they are fat. Moreover, he has agreed to stop telling my husband they look fine. When I hosted the judge (Gayle Eads) this weekend, she said I definitely have to get the weight off them. (The good news is, their health is otherwise superb, including teeth.)

So now Annie, Bitsy and Beckon get one-third cup of Acana AM/PM, plus a large handful of green beans or frozen spinach, plus a scoop of Vibrant Pets in the morning. Layla gets one-fourth cup AM/PM, plus VP, no veggies because she won't eat them -- yet. Everyone gets one "fish gum" capsule on Sunday.

NO HUMAN FOOD!

I have extracted a commitment from the family to support this on pain of killing our Shelties with pancreatitis and arthritis as they age. :dead: By mid-summer, the gang should be back in trim. I'll be posting regular updates. Next weigh-in is in 60 days!

I wish you luck, Chris...it's tough!! I've been struggling with the weight thing with two of mine for months, and they only get 1/4 cup of food twice daily when they're at their optimum weight! I've been using the green beans to supplement, but so far progress is very slow. We weigh weekly, treats are one kibble of diet Wellness, and no human food.

Do keep us posted. Maybe we need a Jenny Canine program for our Shelties! :rolleyes2:

I feel your pain Chris! I've been struggling to get Sadie and Ginny's weight down since mid October. I've got Ginny's weight under control but I've been struggling with Sadie, who is very inactive. They get weighed weekly. I realized this weekend that my dh has been feeding Sadie too much food, so I'm hoping with this discovery that her weight will come down soon and stay down.

Maybe we need a Jenny Canine program for our Shelties! :rolleyes2:

Yes, I think we do!

Best of luck getting the weight off. That is a big job with so many. But Spring is coming and that should help with the excercise. What else did the judge have to say about your troop?

Well, since you asked... :biggrin2:

Layla: expression to die for -- sweetest face.
Bitsy Boodle: Great coat, good head, excellent eye. Walks like Mae West!
Beckon: Excellent head, could do with a slight bit more underjaw. Well balanced, lovely coat, good shoulder angulation, chest coming along well. Personality, personality, personality! Gayle is sure he's not 20 inches, that he must have come down considerably. her advice: buy a wicket and measure him!
Annie Laurie: Perfect topskull, sweet face, great personality. (Translation: Toonie Dog )

I feel your pain! I have been SO putting off putting the dogs on a diet.

They don't get people food, and few treats, so the irrational part of me says they should be fine; no fair to starve them. The rational part of me says: But they are fat, idiot!

I must admit lifting 30 lbs of Sheltie dead weight is no fun! Perhaps thats the motivation. Cottage time is coming so that means in and out of cars and boats.

Good luck! You are my inspiration! :wink2:
