Fur Trimming? pants pants pants!!!

I got some moustache scissors for the poophole - they have a rounded end. Mine both hate having that area cut but it really is a good idea to keep it trimmed. They can get constipation from hair blocking their anus. Mine both try to sit down if I cut it standing up - which is why I got the rounded end scissors. Nowadays I find it much easier to get them to lay on their back and cut their poop hole upside down, while giving regular belly scratches of course. They dont mind it this way.

had no idea that too much hair there can cause constipation ???

What do you think about trimming around the Poophole ??? It gets Very bushy in there and the Poo often gets stuck there. Only problem is my Dog feels it and Hates it. and she starts to Scoot to get the poop off. And i have to Assist her by lifting the tail up and picking out the Poop. It is not a pretty process....

There has been some considerable discussion on the forum of the "poop shoot." I asked the groomer to take care of that for Meggie and she shaved just around the actual hole and straight down about 1 1/2" wide. Between that and the thinning of the sheltie pants we have had a lot less problems. Meggie will always have a "poop shoot" from this point forward. Just makes life easier. Also, it makes the tail lay correctly on her buns!

For Zoe I used to trim the pants relatively short, and around the butt.

Some may say it doesn't look the prettiest, but it was easier to manage and I thought it looked fine. Besides, she wasn't a show dog anyway. lol.

Function over form.

Meggie looks great! I'd say Pidge's pants are not as long but definitely as fluffy! She's not even fully coated out yet, oh dear :o This has been a great wealth of advice, I was wondering how often you wash your dogs? Pidge used to get lots of baths when she was a puppy running for the mud, but now she keeps herself a little bit cleaner. I'm not sure a good amount, I don't want to dry out her skin...though sometimes I have doubts as to whether any water actually makes it through all that hair or not! Is it best to trim when they're wet???

My groomer doesn't like doing this for some reason. I ask her but she never does it. and it is not easy for me to do it since if i lift her tail up to trim the hair, she tries to run away......she doesn't like her tail being lifted up,,not sure why ???? so it is not a easy job for me to trim the hair in that area...

Yep, that's exactly what I am talking about. That's how I trim.

Hmm...that's odd about your groomer. Are you in the US?

Indy is real funny about having his tail lifted as well. It's a struggle to keep him in place, lift his tail and trim with the rounded scissors/bikini shaver. I need about 4 hands to do it because he clamps up so tight.

It's one of the reasons why I'm thinking of getting a grooming arm. I just can't figure out which table to attach it to when its grooming time (I currently do it on the floor over a towel).

Fedace....you are the client. If you want the poop chute done, then your groomer should do it or tell you why she/he has an objection to it. And if you don't like the answer, find another groomer. My groomer does it, and I trim it myself between visits.

Regarding how often I bath my dogs. I do it only 3 to 4 times per year. In between, I use a dry shampoo and leave-in conditioner. If the dogs getting muddy, I towel them off as best as I can. I find that any left over mud just dries up and falls off. Their coat still remains white after that. I don't know why, but its true! I guess I would rather vacuum the dried off mud off the floor, than wash my dogs. And I do think that too often is not good for their skin.

I know when its time for a bath when their fur starts to have a greasy feel to it. Leave-in products will build up over time

The "POOP SHOOT" is the only way to go. I was a week late and ohhhhh Lady had a mess back there. Thank goodness when we went away and returned she didn't have poopy doos hanging at the kennel. Lucky and Lady both got a bath and a shape up. If she would just squat abit more, insteading of walking and taking a poo we would be better off. Its like I have to do my business, and don't have time for this crap.

She doesn't mind me lifting up her tail, its a ritual around here with her.
