Gavin's dotage

the hard part is no beach until it closes up. It's already been 4 weeks of the dog park overlooking the beach. I know Gavin want's to actually go to the beach, though. I'm hoping in 2 weeks maybe 3. There is just no good way to cover his entire rear leg so that it is waterproof; Gavin will wade in pretty far. I could try a waterproof bandage but I just don't want to chance it getting infected....not worth it.

So we have a summer picnic type event at work next week. Thinking of bringing Gavin. Several of my co-workers also worked with me about a decade ago and met him then (both places are super close to where I live/lived so I could go get him occasionally for company social events).
I know his wagon will go, debating the wheelchair. It will invariable attract attentions questions...
Gavin will love all the attention, and kids..there should be kids

So Gavin has been eating poorly since he got sick in december 2021. It's like he forgets to eat....So I have been experimenting on adding appetizers to his kibble. Now some days he eats it on its own, but usually only 1 of his 2 meals. So I have tried pumpkin (gets moldy in the fridge really fast, before I can use up a can), wet food (a can lasts about 2 weeks, pretty solid spoonfuls in his bowl so he can eat only the wet food), and baby food (comes in smaller amounts and more liquidy and easier to spread around his food so he eats more). The meal topper things seem rather wasteful so I ordered this today

It was on sale and not a 12 pack like so many of the similar items, so might not re-order, but whatever it takes, right? I do tend to put some of my leftovers in his food bowl when I eat, too. Things I would never have ever done 5 years ago! I just always feel so sad when I get home from work and he hasnt eaten his food leftover from breakfast (he gets food 2x a day)

I know it's sad when they don't seem to have their good appetite anymore. Lots of people get that way too. Their taste buds aren't as sharp, and they just kind of don't care about eating. Gavin probably doesn't need as many calories anymore since he's not active. One thing you could try if he likes the pumpkin is just freeze ice cube trays with it and thaw as needed. That way you're not wasting.

I'm gonna be really superficial here; I don't like the orange stains on Gavin's ruff from pumpkin. He is a much messier eater (and drinker) now. at least water dries clear!

Oddly enough, his weight hasn't creeped up at all in his old age. His food is pretty much the same amount as 10 years ago.

That looks like really good stuff, Cindy! It will be great if he'll eat it, nutritious too. I tried everything under the sun on Barkley when he wouldn't eat his last few months. None of the toppers tempted him, as you said. I was hand feeding him whatever I could get into him. I ended up using this nutritional gel when he wouldn't eat anything. You just squirt a bit on a spoon, or his tongue. It tastes good so they like it and I knew at least he was getting some nutrition. Here's the link.
