Gavin's Never Ending Dotage (Part 2)

the check engine light, I know what it is. I have a CEL reader. and the is catalytic converter. on a 20 year old car, that would be $$$$ and not a guarantee fix :( CA sucks for that. my mechanic already has said its a crap shoot.
I;ve got a wagon for Gavin, but the stroller is pushable for miles. and now I am hearing because of size (not weight) it could be $80 to get it mailed to me :(
Mom doesn't have a box that fits it well, and my uncle is trying but.....it weighs like 1 lb but is 2 feet long! everything is conspiring against me.
so either I send Mom a giant mailer and pray, or my uncle cuts the box they have down to make it cheaper to send
 
forgot to mention...my SMOG check is due in 3 weeks.
couldn't do it before I left, when everything was fine.
and I won't pass with a CEL.
hence the freaking out bit
 
Totally understand that you feel overwhelmed Cindy. If it were me, at this point I would trust that your uncle or mom can get the handle shipped to you even if they have to jerry-rig a box. I think having that back will allow you to face the other issues. If the car doesn't pass the smog test, you can't renew the registration, is that the problem?
 
I completely understand feeling like everything is against you, been there several times. My best advice is to pour yourself a glass of wine, sit down, breathe deeply, and tell yourself that as long as you and Gavin and your mom are still on this side of the dirt you're doing okay -- all the other things can be dealt with. Then make a priority list. Drink some more wine. Focus on one thing at a time -- either the top of the priority list or what seems to be the easiest thing to deal with. Be sure to break each item into separate tasks. And drink wine after each task. Before you know it either things will be taken care of or you won't really care ... ;)
 
Cindy, I'm sorry the universe is conspiring against you. Believe me, I know how you feel. You are not a failure. The time you spent helping your mom, and Gavin enjoyed the outdoors in the yard are irreplaceable and you will never regret it. I couldn't have said it better than Sharon and Ron. The most important thing is that you have Gavin, and you have your mom. Nothing else matters.

Ask your uncle to take the stroller handle to either UPS or a business and shipping place. They can provide a box, pack it and send it to you. Or it might be worth calling the stroller company and ask what a replacement handle costs. Sometimes that's just cheaper, and then you have two. I found this out when I left the grooming arm to my table behind several times.

In the meantime, we are here for venting when you need it!

yep. that is the problem.
I can pay and drive without the smog and hope I don't get pulled over for something else while I try and fix it (or wait for the light to go off on its own)

I tried that...the stroller company doesn't sell parts.
but my uncle shipped it UPS :)
helps being his favorite niece.....and his only niece :)

Geeky daughter of an ex-mechanic who still rebuilds and restores cars at almost 90. What reader do you have? Since you know your code, you should be able to clear your code. Drive 50 miles or so and see if it stays away. My husband has a 2005 Audi - I hate the car, it's our second and they never did repair electrical issues from the first - he loves it. 18 year old car and has barely 125K miles on it, mainly because if you drive it something breaks. There are emissions leaks everywhere. I take it to a garage that's been dealing with it for years. I tell them, clear the history, get it clean enough to pass emissions. Deal always is I have to drive it straight to emissions, no detours, but they've gotten me to pass the last 3 or 4 times even though the car needs about 6K worth of repairs. Crying always helps too... :) If the CEL appeared cuz of funky gas or something, it might clear on its own but you can sometimes have to drive up to 500 miles for it to run diagnostics throughout the car to see if the issue it thinks still exists. Its easier to clear the code and see if it reappears.

Ron gave you some awesome advice. I am happy to read the handle is on its way. Take a deep breath. You're a good pupper mommy and an even better daughter. We need more caring people like you in our world.
 
I already had a oil change scheduled for friday, so they will clear the code if it is still there.
But I could still fail emissions.. it is a stupid waiting game. warmer weather seems to help it here anyways...its just cold here at present (I know, it was way colder a month ago in Mo and no codes..)
