going for a walk= chaos

Walking with your mother's dog as much as possible is a great idea. Its very confidence building and a great distraction plus dogs learn much more quickly from other dogs. Save longer walks for walking with the goldie, if its just you and Riley start with short walks and build up. It does take time for a pup to build confidence when out walking.

Also try taking a squeaky toy on your walks and if he gets a bit edgy squeak the toy and just stop and have a little play until he relaxes.

Spinning can also be over-excitement. I would make sure both you and your dog are calm before you leave. Try some calming and focus exercises - do some sits and drops and give him a little shoulder/neck massage. And make sure you are calm! If he starts spinning just stop and wait for him to stop and be calm about it. He will notice if you are getting stressed and that's going to make him more stressed.

Dont worry about Riley - its perfectly normal for a pup.

good news !!! i took all you advice and cut up some hot dog put them in a bag and off down the driveway we went he got on the driveway and started whining but i immediatly put the food infront of his nose and he was quite happy to follow me with it. we go to the end of the driveway fine only a few slow downs, everytime he walked he'd get a yummy treat. We got about 6 or 7 houses down before i took him back home at one point he was even walking on his own without me coaxing him. He was tuckered out he slept for a bit then went outside again to play in the yard now he's passed out in his crate.

maybe he will actually sleep in tomorrow morning, here's to wishful thinking!

That's great!! Keep ending the sessions on a positive note and he'll always think you mean good things for him.

I took weeks of work to get Zoey to where she's at with the walks right now. She would constantly pull, bark, and be generally embarassing and annoying. You gotta stay patient, persistent, and your puppy will end up easing down, but remember, it takes a while.

When I began, I couldn't walk more than 300 meters without her just driving me crazy. She now walks 5 kilometers with me every day (at 6 months), and she's generally quiet, follows me 90% or so on the walk. The only issue I'm still working on is that she will lunge and bark at motorcycles, and sometimes tries to pick up stuff on the grass.

Good luck with Riley :)
