Grooming compliments

I wore black pants to the office today and was outside taking a break, when one of my staff commented on the fact that she can't figure out how I can wear black and not have dog fur all over me. She said that she's been watching this for months, so I guess it must be true.

The fact is that my boys DON'T shed! I don't know why that is, but they don't. When I brush, I pull out enough to stuff pillows, but it just does not seem to fall on its own. They are normally brushed every 1 or 2 weeks and bathed about every 3 months. Am I just lucky or have I found a secret?

They are from two different lines, so its not genetics. And Indy's pants are so thick you'd think they would have to flow sometime. But they never do.

So when people tell me that they would never get a Sheltie because of the fur, I'm just going to point them to my black pants.

I have to agree with you,as just yesterday, someone made the same comment to me,but I was wearing blue.

Even as young as Trapp is,he gets a good brushing at least 2x a week.Just tonite I lined brushed him.It took me a good long while, but so worth the outcome.Especially in the pants area. For a young puppy,he has such a nice coat, and proud when someone says so.

Jasper's coat is thick like cotton, but he really enjoys a nice brushing to.

My dogs are the same way.

I was holding a 5 month old Golden Retriever the other day and I was covered in hair!!! I never have hair on me and I wear black all the time.

Hamish's undercoat would get really thick but he didn't shed a lot. Noah on the other hand shed a whole lot. I could brush him one day and then the next day brush him again and get as much off him as the day before. The vacuum brush was also covered in fur. Emma doesn't seem to be shedding much at all. I can get by brushing her every week or two. Noah needed to be brushed a lot, and everytime the temperature changed, he shed, even if it was day to day.

It's always nice to get compliments on how well our furkids look. It's like dressing up kids in their Sunday best.

I hear you...

people are always amazed when I tell them Gavin gets combed once a week at the most...they seems to think shelties require daily grooming. But then apparently most people don't want to comb their dog at all :( Maybe that's one of the reasons labs are so popular?

And then I see dogs (not too many shelties here in NorCal) that I just want to puppy nap so I can comb them and trim their paw fur and clip their nails so bad. Gavin doesn't like being brushed, but because it's me he tolerates it :P And he prances when it's all over cause he knows he's a gorgeous pup!

They may not want to comb them or want a dog that doesn't shed but people are always shocked that Labs shed so much. If I had a dollar for everyone who said "they are short haired dogs, I thought they didn't shed" I could retire.

My shelties hair stays put even when they are blowing coat as well and waits for me to brush it out. My families Lab drop it all over the house and I would comb my Lab when she was blowing coat and I could still get a trash can full of hair. It was amazing.

You have no idea the condition of the avg dogs coat. :dead: I can't honestly believe people have some of these dogs in their house and actually want to pet them. :( Their not at abuse/neglect levels just dirty, smelly and slightly clumpy in the undercoat.

Most people just don't know how to care for the dog's coat. I remember this one lady years ago before I had shelties. She brought her dog( a nice looking blue merle) in for loosing hair and flaking skin. It was coming out in clumps. She had gotten the dog a year and a half before and he din't look like this then, he had a "beautiful coat". Well obviously he was blowing his coat and he looked like a tumble weed. Amzingly he was not matted. I explained what was going on and asked when the last time he was brushed. Her answer "Brushed?" 1.5yr never touched by a brush or bathed. I grabed my pet rake from the drawer and gave 4 quick swipes and removed as much undercoat to make another sheltie. She seriously asked if she could borrow my brush for a few days. I kindly pointed her to the pet store down the street were she could buy her own supplies and also gave her the number of a good groomer.:smile2:

I agree! Short hair dogs of any breed, their hair weaves into furniture etc. like threads sticking up. I rather have the sweeper out getting the sheltie tumble weeds up. 1.5 years old? Maybe this person goes to my vet, who are having fits with the sheltie owners. Its really sad when my vets get frustrated.

Mine shed in droves lately. The weather just turned warm (an understatement) and I think the prolonged winter altered when they blow their coat. I've been seeing the sheltie tumblefurs more and more! I think tonight I'm going to give them a good warm bath and line-brushing. I JUST gave a lengthy grooming session (no bath though) two days ago, but it just keeps coming. I think the warm water will do wonders for them.

Usually, however, I don't get much hair on me. Everyone loves Abbie's short, thick coat and they are tickled at Duncan's adolescent one. I can't wait until he looks a little less disheveled! At least he is clean, free of mats, and smells very nice.

Tonight:
1) Mow back yard
2) Fix trailer brakes that Sca ate
3) Brush Sca (no not out of revenge) with special attention to behind his ears and his tail. Well and as always his behind :eek2:
