Gypsy's Kidneys

Oh Dawn, I'm so very sorry this is happening after all you have just been through with Chandler. I am keeping you and Gypsy steadfastly in my prayers. I hope it's just the antibiotics, they can have peculiar side effects.

Dawn I am so very sorry to hear about Gypsy and so soon after Chandler. I know all to well how hard it is to get a dog to eat that is not well. When Katie was so sick towards the end my vet said give her Mighty dog canned food. So perhaps something gosh awful she will eat. My heart goes out to you and know you are in my prayers.

Dawn, I am so sorry to hear about Gypsy's problems. You have been through so much. I hope the respite from the antibiotics brings back her appetite. It's so tough to get them to eat when they don't feel well.

Our last ditch, go-to solution for dogs that won't eat is canned tuna fish. It has a really strong smell, and the kind in oil is even better, plus you can mix in some warm water to get fluids into her. You might give that a try if all else fails.

I'm sending prayers and thoughts for you and Gypsy. Keep the faith. Sending hugs too!

I came across this and thought of you. I thought you might be interesting in reading it...

http://www.dogaware.com/health/kidneynattie.html This dog weighs 44 lbs so you'd want to feed the amount based on their weight as her detailed diet would be too much food. When my dogs I got sick, i was up for trying anything and everything, so hope this is of some value to you.

Still sending good vibes to you both!

Thanks for the link. I also have Lew Olson's book which Rachel recommended awhile back but lent it to my neighbor. i put a call into her lastnight so will be rereading the diet she recommends also. Every bit of knowledge I can get I am open to. Thanks again.

Dawn I'm so sorry to hear that Gypsy is not doing well. I hope that her appetite returns now that the antibiotic is on hold. I'll be continuing my prayers for you guys.

After about 28 hrs. off the antibiotic Gypsy did eat about a 1/4 cup of food so I was pleased to see that. After not having a bowel movement since Tues. she finally went at midnight lastnight. I am keeping a record of all food eaten, water intake, when she empties her bladder and has a bowel movement. I think the more info. the better. While searching lastnight I found some great info. at veterinarypartner.com on Kidney disease. Plenty of links to well balanced diet sites such as balanceit.com which my vet has recommended to me in the past. He knows the vet that started this site and it offers homemade meal recipes for healthy dogs or for specific illnesses.

Thanks for all your prayers and concerns and I will keep you updated on how we do the next couple days. I am hoping since she ate a bit yesterday it is the antibiotic that was making her stomach upset.

I've been thinking about you and poor Gypsy on and off all day Dawn, and am really pleased to hear she has eaten and had a bowel movement.
I asked a bearded collie owner friend of mine who has decades of dog experience in sickness and in health (so to speak) and she said some antibiotics can cause nausea etc, so fingers crossed that is the cause.
Will continue to keep everything crossed and hope that things continue to improve over tomorrow.

Great news and that is wonderful that you have a homemade food web site you can go to and get ideas for her. Hope she continues to improve and eat.
