Had a problem with breeder...

Sounds like to me, she sucked you in for the money, not your help.

I would try to talk to her again. If she acts indignent, tell her in a very nice way, that you will go to ASSA and place a complaint against her, I will inform BBB, I will call AKC. If I have to I will file a grievance against you, that you did not hand me a contract, you refuse to hand over the paperwork and will make my shelties worthless to me. This is what you verbally promised, blah blah blah.

Since you paid in cash, you also will tell her you will report this amount of money to the IRS. You can be nice, but use muscle.

Go to your state's Attorney General site, and look up Business Ethics. You do have consumer rights.

Its horrible anymore, anything you do, anything you buy, its like, well do I have to lawyer up? Times are ridiculous, and I wish you well.

The next time someone wants cash, tell them you will make out a Certified Personal Check. That money is held for the person that you are doing a business transaction with.

Thank you, this is great advice. I had no idea that I had to protect myself like this, and I will definately be more wary. I thought I was purchasing a lifelong friend, and I thought I was getting a mentor as well, which would have been priceless.

Unfortunately this event left me doubting my love for Shelties, and I felt used and helpless. Thank you for helping me out on this! :o

I did want to say I bought my boy from a backyard breeder, he is not a show dog, and I had him neutered. No contract to have him neutered. My girl is not for show either, and she was on a limited. I can't do a litter, I would be on the floor passed out.

"IF" she draws up a contract stating you have to sell these puppies on a limited contract, I wonder if she go for that?

My post was concentrating on the amount in cash with no contract on your male sheltie, she thinks he might be show worthy, is that is what she really thought, or was it to take you for $800? If he ended up to be show worthy, was she thinking of co-ownership since she asked for your help, or a pick puppy with her choice of the bitch? What was she really thinking?

Even if you have your shelties neutered she should come up with the papers.

This dog had littermates, and she chose to keep him for a year to grow out. Then when her next litter arrived, she thought those pups had more potential and decided to sell the dog I have now.

I told her I wanted a 'practice' dog, since I know the show circuit takes time to master, so I wasn't necessarily purchasing him to "win" with, rather to practice with, and to be a companion for my other Sheltie of the same age. He is sturdy, and has a stable enough temperment, and willing to try a variety of things. It seemed perfect...till the certificate issue came up. I was moving a considerable distance and wanted to get things in order before I left, needless to say, I moved, and I have tried through phone calls and emails, no avail.

I am moving back to her location in a few months, but I don't know if I will have much luck. I am doing the best I can by trying to remain civil (which is very challenging at this point). But I do love my dog, and will keep him no matter what, it's just so darn frustrating being on the receiving end of the run-around.

Turn her in to AKC! You are supposed to hand over papers with the dog! If people would actually read the little orange pamphlet that comes with the registration papers the might know this :smile2:
From the AKC site...
C. IDENTIFYING DOGS
AT TIME OF DELIVERY
If properly completed AKC registration papers are
not supplied with the dog when it is shipped or delivered
to someone else, the person delivering or shipping
the dog must furnish the person acquiring the
dog with a bill of sale or other signed memorandum
giving all of the identifying information listed below.

A promise of later identification is not acceptable.
For a Dog Not Yet Individually Registered
Breed
Sex and color and markings
Date of birth
Litter number (when available)
Names and numbers of sire and dam
Name of breeder
Date sold or delivered
For a Registered Dog
Breed
Registered name
Registration number
Date sold or delivered
This identifying information must be supplied with
the dog even though AKC papers are not yet available,
and even to a person who takes the dog only for resale
as an agent or on consignment, and the same information
must be passed on by him when he disposes of it.

(The only exception to this requirement is when there
is a written agreement made between the parties when
the dog is delivered specifying that registration papers
are never to be given.)

I think I would be concerned as to whether this dog actually has papers. If papers are lost in the UK it is fairly straightforward for the breeder to replace them. To be giving you such a runaround she is either very scatter-brained and can't get herself organised to get new papers, or there is something wrong and there is no paperwork.

Though this is frustrating, at the end of the day you have by the sounds a lovely dog and there is plenty of competitive stuff you can do with him aside from showing.

I considered showing my lab, but he is too short for the Kennel Club Standard, so even though otherwise he has nice conformation he would never get anywhere. So I ditched that idea, had him neutered and we are now working on agility and obedience - maybe, one day, we will compete in those.

I guess what I am saying is, even if you can't show him, there is plenty else you can do. So enjoy your dog and remember to get the papers the day you get the pup next time :wink2:

AKC has confirmed he is indeed registered. But they said there is nothing that they can do without the breeder's help. Oh, and the best part? I can't compete with Cody in ANY AKC event without them.

That's really too bad, I can only imagine how upset you must be right now.

If I were in your situation I would take Sable's advice about calling the breeder and nicely telling her about reporting her. But that's just me. If that doesn't go anywhere I guess its up to you as to whether or not you want to take her to court. I personally would be thinking about it, as things like this make me soo angry! I HATE it when people are dishonest like that.

I'm sorry you can't compete in any AKC events but try to remember, there are many other dog sports that don't require registration papers (CPE, USDAA, NADAC, and TDAA, for example, as someone previously said)

Thank you! Yes, I am mad, but I am not going to let this get me down. If this had happened a week after I bought him, I probably would have wanted the money back, but now, after we bonded, he is priceless. We will still continue on!

I think I agree with Ontario and Sable, tell her that you are going to make a complaint against her with the AKC if she doesn't get the papers to you. Give her a drop dead date and if she doesn't follow through, file the complaint. It will look really bad for her.

I can't believe that she didn't give the papers to you. I got my blue merle, Rasha, from a breeder for free and she gave me the paperwork that day. She actually wrote up a receipt stating that I paid her $1.00 for Rasha and that she would send me the AKC paperwork after I proved that Rasha was spayed. I think that was all for accounting purposes. I was supposed to have her spayed within the first few months but I haven't done it yet because money has been tight. But I just keep an eye on her when she is in season and we have a fenced in yard so I just don't leave her out very long. No need for mixed puppies not to mention I would now anything about whelping puppies!!

I had a similar situation happen....I purchased a sheltie from a breeder that I thought was a reputable show breeder. I purchased mine on a neuter contract though, and she was supposed to deliver his papers after he'd been neutered....well I had him neutered at 9 months, sent her the proof, but no papers. We had kept in touch by email for the whole time, but every time I would ask about his papers, she would ask me if he was neutered yet, then say she forgot I neutered him already and she'd send them....then out of the blue another breeder sued her, accused her of animal cruelty, for what I'm not sure, and she dropped off the face of the earth.

My boy is two now and no papers...I decided to let it go, but in my case I never intended to show him...

From the breeders perspective in your case though, she may think you intended to breed him with your other sheltie all along and is holding the papers so you can't register the litter....she may think she is in the right on this one if he wasn't supposed to be bred. It may help if you neuter him or your other sheltie and tell her you plan to sell the pups with neuter contracts.

Sorry, but the breeder knows that if she signed him over on limited, the litter still coudn't be registered.
