Halloween!

Is it normal in the US that you dress your Sheltie out, for this I would never do with my dogs, never.

It is becoming more and more popular to dress dogs in Halloween costumes in general. Some pet stores will have a costume contest. I'm in the group where I won't do it unless it's under special circumstances.

So, when I was a teenager, I discovered they made Halloween costumes for dogs! How cool is that? I wanted so badly to dress our dogs up (Sheltie and Border Collie). My dad said no, we don't put costumes in dogs. I'm pretty sure it had more to do with spending money on costumes for dogs than their actual comfort, as he had no issues when my sister and I put our dress-up clothes on the Sheltie. So as I got older, I kind of adopted the opinion that dogs shouldn't wear costumes (or clothes for that matter) because it's kinda mean, especially if they don't enjoy wearing them.

So last year, my company announced they were doing a pet Halloween costume contest. I couldn't resist since I'm always looking for excuses to bring Missy to my office. So I bought her a Super Girl dress. She didn't mind it, I made sure it wasn't something overly complicated and nothing that went on her head. She won the costume contest ($75 gift card to Petco) so that was cool. This year I haven't heard anything about another pet costume contest, so I won't be buying her another costume. Or making her wear the Super Girl dress again. I'm okay with bandanas. I won't buy holiday collars because you just can't see it with all that hair.

If there was a Halloween flyball tournament, I would most definitely dress her up to walk around in... just sayin lol.

Here's Missy in her Super Girl costume. There were definitely more creative costumes, so I'm not sure how she won the whole thing. I personally think she was the most well behaved one there. And cutest. Definitely the cutest.

Minnie to Spitfire:
The airplanes I have seen, is up in the sky, and you can hardly hear them, so maybe your airplanes probably are a different kind. :confused2:

But I am afraid that it will take much too long time if you use the mailman.

I seemed your plan on leaping on Sca, though despite his armored look when he has his suit on- is rally smart, then your mom might see it is a bad idea with costumes at poor Sea :biggrin2:

Minnie here:
Attention - to all of you lovely Shelties whose parents would put you in these horrific costumes - please came home to me.

I make costume free party with lots of fun, a walk on the beach, treats, lovely gnaw bones and the best - catching game, but I do not think you can catch me, because I run extremely quick, but I would love, if you all would try

When we are totally tired so we all must sleep in my mom's bed --so hurry!! - take the first airplane to Denmark :hugs
I told Spitfire about how your rain gets hard then turns white for weeks on end. He thinks costumes are better.

Signed
Sca

gift card - Definitely a good thing, I could use one, then I'd buy some jummy(?) treats.

I am quite sure Missy won because of her really lovely face, and she had a good behavior  (good I did not take part) :biggrin2:

Hanne here:
it is only within the last 5-10 years that the stores are starting to sell all the Halloween stuff.

Here it's not been a tradition yet.

It is less popular here but was huge when I grew up in Michigan. We also had something that Spitfire would love called Devil's Night. It was the night before Halloween when you went out and caused trouble. Though there was an etiquette to it such as soaping windows was OK, wax would get you in HUGE trouble etc.

Sca will be in heaven at the tournament as everyone will give him attention and treats. He is a people/dog dog and loves everyone. Spitfire not so much :rolleyes2:

ROAR!!!! run it is a StegaScagaSaurus!

He doesn't like the head piece so it is probably not used. I also needed to get it on his leg better but it actually fits OK

Calls Mom you might warn Cranberry that it would fit him also :eek2:

that is actually pretty cute:smile2:
while it might fit Cran, not sure I could get him into it.
the only dogs that I dressed up were Callie and Happy....

Yes, I decided the gift card was for buying treats to make up for the costume!

A bit funny  because for many, many years ago when my mother was a child this was what they did New Year's Eve like to hoist up the Christmas tree in the flagpole (?).

Nowadays there is no etiquette, people do what they want. :uhoh:

incl. all the nasty fireworks that people spend a fortune on and all dog owners hate.
