Handler Novice Agility

Anybody else hating the weaves?

SO, foundation level 2...
I need a bait pouch! Any of you use those?!?
Why haven't I ever been informed of them.. !?? lol
I used to think those are silly, but now I can see why they are handy!!

In class.. he is still a bit shy at present to just be motivated with the tug, although it works in the backyard...(working on this still wherever I go I take the tug and engage him... so he learns tug is great wherever you are)

The other big thing is that I am trying to teach the 2x2 method of weaving, with my BAD timing, :o and I realized that a bait pouch would work, because when I was throwing the hot dog pieces (his high value treat) they rolled god knows where... then he looks to me for treats, so I finally figured with the food I am not quick enough with the rewards at the moment...

I use garden stakes for weaves, what did u guys use in the beginning?

At the end of class he DID have drive for the weaves, because my trainer was throwing the rewards for me :o
Toffee is like me, we really need to think things through and then make the right decisions...

Good news is that I do not think he is a velcro dog, believe it or not! I was able to send him out a bit and we started threading and redirecting... was great seeing him (and more so ME) get it, actually. I really AM amazed how awesome these dogs are at reading us! I needed to be taught what signals work, and Toffee never questioned it, he went out and stayed out !! ... did I mention MY thick skull?
:)

I don't use a bait pouch, but I know a lot of people that do! I also don't know anything about the 2x2 weave method. All I can say is that teaching weaves is a tough process. At one point, I remember saying to my husband "Bentley is NEVER going to learn how to weave". So just stay with it. :smile2:

When we taught weaves we were actually able to borrow a set of poles from the club (yay!) and we'll do the same when we teach Lexi.

That's a really great sign that he's able to work independently some and drive towards the obstacles, yay Toffee!

I use a bait bag. My clothes dont always have pockets, so i find the bait bag works well. My friends have teased me and called it a fanny pack lol. my training school requires a bait bag or a hoody to hide treats.

Thank goodness, you're telling me weave training is a process... I thought I just really suck at it!! My trainer also says stick with it, and get a bait bag, because you throw those more accurately and they don't roll and bounce... so makes sense... ALSO, I need a funny pack, too LOL... I never realized that the dog doesn't get the treats OUT of the pouch, that you go to it and release it, can't believe I didn't know nor understand!

I now get it, versus clothes pockets.. man you need a free hand, also should have the reward in the hand closest to the dog, much easier to transfer ... SO off to find a bait pouch... any ideas where I shall shop online???

I purchased mine at Bailey's training school. I know they sell them at petsmart. if you have one in your area.

this is similar to the one I have:
http://www.amazon.com/Premier-Pet-T...1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1279550508&sr=8-1

If you search "bait bag" "treat bag", etc you'll find a bunch on amazon.

I have this bag too. I have to say though, if you're going to use it a LOT (as in putting your hand in and out a lot), I'd suggest something that stays open. I did a long training session and the skin on my knuckle was raw and gone. It's a great pouch if you're not doing that all day though.

Also, for throwing things, I bought those pouches made of rabbit, they're also tug toys. I did it so Koji would learn to tug more. Which he did. It also meant I didn't have to remove my bait bag all the time, lol. But whatever you choose, the one above is a great pouch.

Try this link.. I got the one in red... Toffee IS ball crazy but I work with food to start out with in other venues... as the high value reward.. I think a pouch might bring that out more.. combo of two.. sounds like a great idea
I love the idea of the rabbit pouch.. I also want to encourage more tug...!!
How/where did ya get that?
