Hate Purina, need to switch

Beau get Acana limited ingredient dry and Verus wet food.

1/4 c twice a day and enough wet just to moisten the dry.

I'm still unsure about the ProPlan but I'm not sure if I'm going to switch now. I recently found out that Guy Mauldin, the top Shetland Sheepdog breeder in the NATION, feeds his dogs Purina ProPlan Sprot (the same exact food I feed mine). I've had the privilege to see a few of his dogs in person and their fur is GORGEOUS. One of his handlers that I meet said that the reason my dogs fur was so dry and unhealthy was because of my grooming tools. She said my slicker brush was WAY to harsh and was tearing up their fur and recommended a CC. I now have one on it's way. Would it still be a good idea to switch their food? I don't like all the ingredients in it and it doesn't seem to have enough meat. What should I do?:confused2:

I'd say that a lot of breeders feed ProPlan- it's more affordable for the amount of dogs that they are feeding than to try and feed them all something like Orijen, Acana, or some of the other brands that people on here use.
If you don't have 5+ dogs to feed then you can afford to spend a little more.

It's true that a lot of breeders feed ProPlan and Eukanuba (which at least is slightly better than it used to be) but there's a reason for that. First, they frequently get deals from the company or even endorsements and second, as Calliesmom said, they're feeding a larger amount of dogs.

IMO those aren't reasons for choosing a dog food. I encourage you to READ THE INGREDIENTS on the label and make your choice that way, as an informed consumer. If the food has by-products, wheat, corn, gluten etc., you're feeding your dog the equivalent of doggie junk food. It's full of fillers, which is why you will feed the dog at least twice as much as you would of a quality food. It takes much less of a good product to satisfy the dog's nutritional requirements.

It's easy to be swayed by the top names. Please remember the show coats you see have been treated, washed, sprayed, shaped, chalked and primped to within an inch of their life. My dogs have great coats too, and they eat good food so their insides are as healthy as their outsides...even when they aren't dressed to show.

Switching from Purina

I resonantly had another breeder tell me that ProPlan was a good food, and it was from someone I trust. But I trust you too. Right now I'm looking at my dog's freshly groomed coat looking dry and unbrushed. It's obvious what I'm doing isn't working. So I'm going to go ahead and try something new, after all how would it hurt? I think I'm going to get Wellness first, and it they don't like it I'll try Blue (those are the best foods that I can get locally).

But I have had a change of heart about ProPlan though. I don't hate it, and it works for a lot of people. So if a mod wouldn't mind please changing the title of this thread from "Hate Purina, need to switch" to the title I've made for this post I would really appreciate it. Thanks!:o

And thanks to everyone who has given me some grate advise!:hugs

It's day three into the process of switching them to Wellness Core. I got the Original Formula. I've separated the food into 3 big ziplock bags, they have 75%, 50%, and 25% Proplan mixed with Wellness. I'm hoping this will last about 3 weeks for all four dogs.

I noticed a difference from day 1. They're CHEWING THEIR FOOD! I never thought I'd see the day! Recently Jody has stopped chewing anything. If he can't swallow it whole, he won't eat it. Now he will.:confused2: I don't know if the food has anything to do with it, but what ever it is it's working!

Forgive me for laughing, but reading the following gave me the BIGGEST chuckle:

...I noticed a difference from day 1. They're CHEWING THEIR FOOD!...

The things that we find to be happy about  ! Chewing not gulping - poo textures and colors - peeing here but not there. I don't know what anyone else thinks, but we are an odd bunch - - - (and I love it)!!!!!

@ JLSOhio - are we any closer to sheltie acquisition? You've been saying soon, very soon for a while now...

Yes! When are you getting a little furbaby Jeff?!

I finished the last project (recently) that I wanted to finish before I made any commitments. I was afraid if I found a possible companion before I got everything in order, I might make an unwise decision if I actually saw a puppy before I had the time to devote to a fur baby. I have two potential vets lined up (one in Indiana and one in Ohio because I still have interests that will have me traveling back and forth). I have a list of potential trainers for help, but haven't really made any selections.

I have now talked to a few breeders and it is just a matter of when one of them may have pups available. (None of them have litters right now, but you all know how that works). What I want is male Bi Blue (preference) or a male Blue Merle from one of the breeders I identified. My last Sheltie was a sable. I am willing to wait as long as necessary to get what I want. Basically, that is where I am.
