Have to decide how to handle serious illness!

Mark and Susan,
My heart just aches for you today. It sounds as if Fasb is trying to let you know that he has tried his best but no longer can be with you. Animals have a way of hiding and trying to be alone at the end.
You were great sheltie parents and did all you could to help him through and now you must let him go to the Rainbow Bridge. Virtual hugs to you both.
We all are crying tears... I am so sorry. Blessings...

Hope it's ok ghggp -I quote to your warm post.
But Mark and Susan I can not find words that fit better.

Now we have the ability to protect our animals from suffering, then we must use it, no matter how hard it is, and it really hurts so much in our heart, I really, really feel with you both. :hugs

We'll post about today later, and start a Shelties Angel thread, but Fasb did leave us today. It was harder than I could have imagined. Fasb started the day seeming more alert and active than he has the past few days. We had to put him in his "room" when Mark went to a meeting because he was running around the room barking and acting up a storm. That's normal for him, but he hasn't had that much energy lately, so it surprised us.

Anyway, after Mark went to work, Fasb played with me some, let me give him some attention, went from room to room and down stairs, ate just a bit of peanut butter, etc. Seemed more himself than he has been. So we were a little hopeful he was showing improvement and we'd get a reprieve. I lost my resolve. When we left, I was basically asking Mark to try to bring him home, even if for only a couple days.

I don't think Mark would have waffled. He knew Fasb was starting to suffer. But it never came to that. Fasb's bloodwork was at least as bad as last week's. The fluid therapy didn't help at all. Some values were worse. There wasn't anything to be done. We both thought it was too much to even try to infuse more fluid in him and take him home for one last night.

He was a great dog. I had no idea how many people Fasb touched until today. We spent the afternoon letting some friends know. Fasb's groomer guessed the news as soon as Mark walked through the door and broke down. The employees at our old vet's office cried. One of our neighbors asked us not to tell her husband. She'll tell him after he gets home. She's afraid he'll be too distraught to drive.

We miss him terribly, but it's good he's at peace.

With heavy heart
and tears in my eyes
after all these years
we must say our goodbyes.

Please understand
I did all that I could
If there was anything I could do
you know that I would.

One last hug, one last kiss,
You have no idea
how much you will be missed.

So with heavy heart
and tears in my eyes
you for now my dear friend
We’ll say our goodbyes.

The Last Battle

If it should be that I grow frail and weak,
and pain should keep me from my sleep.
Then you will do what must be done,
for this last battle can’t be won.

You will be sad I understand,
but don’t let grief than stay your hand.
For on this day more than the rest,
your love and friendship must stand the test.

We’ve had so many happy years,
you would not want me to suffer so.
So when the time comes please let me go.

Take me to where my needs they’ll tend,
only stay with me until the end,
hold me firm and speak to me
until my eyes can no longer see.

I know in time that you’ll agree
this was the kindest thing you did for me.
Although, my tail it’s last has waved,
from pain and suffering I have been saved.

Don’t grieve that it must be you,
who has to decide this thing to do.
We’ve been so close we two, these years,
Don’t let your heart hold any tears.

We were blessed to have you in our lives.
All the beautiful memories we have of you,
we will carry with us each and every day of our lives.

Rest in Peace, my loving and faithful companion.
Your battle is over.

You will be greatly missed!

Susan and Mark...you gave your beloved Fasb the most loving gift you could give...you took away his struggle and his pain and he is now at peace. I know how empty your home and hearts will feel as you come to terms with his passing...these gentle souls leave behind such a huge hole when their time with us is over. But Fasb will forever remain alive in your hearts...death cannot take away the years of love you shared with him and the precious memories that in time will bring smiles instead of tears.

Please accept my deepest sympathy.

Trini

My deepest and sincerest sympathies to you and Mark, Susan. It's never an easy decision and I hope some day you will find peace and comfort in the knowledge you did all you could for him and, in the end, gave him the most loving gift of all.

Focus on the good times you had with Fasb during this time of grief and let them bring some healing balm to the empty place in your heart. He will always be with you.

Healing prayers for you and Mark.

I'm so sorry to hear that Fasb has gone to the Bridge - but I'm glad that his final day was a good one. I'm sure it felt awful to have to do it, but you truly did give him the greatest possible gift - not suffering, just peacefully letting go. Even in humans, shortly before their bodies give out, they get one final surge of energy and have a last good day - and it sounds like Fasb wanted to make sure this last day was special. He knew.

Kisses blown skyward for your beloved Fasb.

My heart goes out to you Mark and Susan. The road was long and hard, I know how that is, but you went above and beyond what most dog parents would do (okay, maybe not the group here, but you know what I mean).

Although I knew Fasb had gone to Rainbow Bridge, it was so nice to hear about him being his normal self, barking and playing and yes, even eating a bit. Remember to keep the memories of when he was youthful and himself, not these hard past few weeks (months?).

Just remember, everyone grieves differently, so however you grieve, just know that it's okay. You will be in my thoughts.

RIP Fasb.
