Have to decide how to handle serious illness!

So very sorry for your loss. Our hearts are hurting for you. Letting Cody go was the hardest thing we ever had to do. We went through everything you are feeling now. Greif, second guessing, the empty house, even anger at our vet. Given time, those thoughts fade, and all the good memories of Fasb will fill your hearts with smiles. I have followed your posts, Fasb had a great life, and you two were great pet parents. :hugs

I feel guilty I couldn't find a way to give him more quality time, but I think he had a good life. He was loved every day and spoiled rotten.

Sometimes no matter how much we love them, we can't change things. You did so much for him and always made your decisions with his best interests in mind.

We talked to the vet last night. He feels Fasb always got good care. He doesn't feel we did or didn't do anything near the end that would have made a lot of difference.

I'm still bothered by the arthritis issue. Fasb never suffered greatly from arthritis, but there were times we could have done more. He developed arthritis fairly young. At first, the only sign was that he had to "pump" to jump on our bed. He did steps fine and was jumping a lot on things he could take a bit of a running start. The space around the bed was narrow. He had to do it from a standing start. We had never owned an animal before so it took us a bit to realize it was arthritis and put him on a supplement.

We never let arthritis go untreated and it never got really severe, but we weren't always quick to recognize the signs (he eventually went on prescription meds but that was much later).

We also found some quality of life assessments while we were cleaning up the hard drive last night. Read through a number of them and took the "quizzes". Near as we can figure, his quality of life was still very good until near the very end.

Mark and Susan, I'm so sorry to hear about Fasb. It's clear from reading all your Forum posts, though, that you did everything possible to give him a great life and make him comfortable. Arthritis can be fickle -- very debilitating some days and a bit better others, but it's a miserable disease that only gets worse. It sounds like Fasb had a really good last day and I hope that comforts you. You did everything you could...it's normal to doubt your decision but you shouldn't. You gave your boy peace.

My heart aches for you -- the best Sheltie parents a boy could ask for.

Dear St. Francis,
We know you are watching over Fasb at the Bridge. Send comfort to his family as they struggle to cope with their loss of a wonderful Sheltie. He gave great joy to many, noth in person and through his extended Sheltie Nation family. Please tell Fasb that to him, it will seem but the twinkling of an eye before he is reunited with his Mom and Dad once more.
In His name we ask,
Amen

This thread needs a puppy Fasb and adult Fasb picture to remind you how great he was rather than the end

Don't beat yourself up. It is obvious y'all loved the guy and did what you thought right at the time. It is the best anyone can do and expecting more is unreasonable.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Fasb will be truly missed on this forum. You went above and beyond for him. Every dog should have wonderful pet parents like you. I am sure he lived a long and happy life and at the end you gave him the most selfless gift of all and that was letting him go peacefully. Rest peacefully Fasby.

Mark and Susan, I am very sorry for your loss. Keep the memories of happy times close to your heart. Take care.

It really hits me in the morning. He'd get up with Mark and follow him around in the early morning, then come back to the bedroom and be there when I got up.

It gets easier as the day goes on, but it's hard in the morning.

Susan, losing such a special soul is losing a piece of your heart. And the loss of those little endearing daily habits is a constant reminder that a chapter in your life has closed. Hopefully, in time, you and Mark can open a new chapter... but Fasb will forever be with you in spirit and through the precious memories he has left behind.

Trini
