Have you ever been amazed by something your Sheltie has done?

I believe that Shelties are more intuitive than many breeds, and I think some have more than others, sometimes in different areas: children, illness, emotional upset.

When my granddaughter was born Checkers appointed herself guardian. She would come from anywhere in the house, whether at our house or my daughter's, if Lyra cried to comfort her. Even now at nearly 15 and hard of hearing, if she hears a baby cry she looks for it. She's also sensitive to illness. Years ago, I had an infection on the back of my leg which I couldn't see because of where it was and assumed it was a bug bite. Checkers poked at my leg with her nose for days until I finally went to the doctor and found out it was serious and got treatment.

Once when we were visiting the Behavioral Health Ward (locked) at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, there was a man in his uniform sitting alone. Layla walked over and lay at his feet, very close. I sat near, and I heard his say, very softly, "I have a Sheltie." We talked about his Sheltie girl, Hannah, as he petted Layla. How she knew, I'll ever know, but Layla always does.
Dag Chris that got me sniffling.

Checkers was a wonderful guardian!

Teddy is a great comforter.

Fillion MUST see the babies/kids. Walking, strollers, bikes--doesn't matter. He wants to check them out, then we can be on our way. We had no small kids around when Fil was pup so I don't know where it came from!

Koko has the patience of a saint. Our new neighbor has three small boys, youngest is about 2, and crippled. He is very shy, but loves dogs. Because his legs are so badly deformed, his little face is exactly at Koko's face's height. So they stand there, nose to nose as Baby pats him so gently. This just happened a few days ago, and Baby waved at me for the first time yesterday instead of burying his head in Dad's legs. :)

Benson is the medic alert dog. He went crazy barking right before my husband passed out about a year ago, of course I had no idea what was wrong with Benny--then I heard the thump as Rod went down. Ever since that incident he has woken me up in the middle of the night by jumping on the bed and pawing at me if he thinks hubby needs help. One time he did and one time he didn't but Benson got heaps of praise both times!!

These posts reminded me of when Piper was a pup and had maybe been with us for 2 weeks. I’d had Riley who at that point was 6 1/2 for just a year so Shelties were relatively new to me. My mom’s bedroom was on the second floor and I’d taken Piper upstairs to see my mom and of course Riley followed. I witnessed an amazing feat of herding behaviour of which Riley had never been trained on. I was sitting on the stairs in case Piper got too close but it was totally unnecessary because Riley did circles around Piper while barking at him, slowly leading him away from the stairs! He’d sensed that it was dangerous for Piper and his instincts totally kicked in. It still amazes me to this day! I’ve never seen this with any of my current dogs.

These were at Meet the Breeds in 2017 when Piper was 2...he was in love with the kids and just the best behaved...he loves all kids even though he’d never been exposed to them as a pup. Also will freely go to seniors for full on petting and doesn’t want to leave even when the stop!FBA79376-1685-41EB-9078-3E03BA784C77.jpegAD482EF0-34EF-4D8A-B1A6-1127DE8C2614.jpeg72D37DB6-7ACE-4C4C-BF9B-D93A7CCB8B83.jpeg

Absolutely beautiful Ann...that Checkers is one amazing girl!

These stories and photos are wonderful...I'm enjoying all of them! Just reinforces what a wonderful breed we have....not only smart, but empathetic and compassionate!

On the other side of the coin, today I had two of the girls at the chiro doc for adjustments. There was another lady in the waiting room with a smaller white, curly-coated dog who was misbehaving every way you can think of. She looked over at my two angels sitting there perfectly calm and quiet and asked "Are they ALWAYS like that and where can I get one?" I laughed and explained that they take umbrage at birds flying past their windows at home, the phone ringing, water running, etc etc etc and barkbarkBARKbarkbark. They're like those kids you take to someone else's house and they're perfect angels until they get home.... :ROFLMAO:

I love all these stories! Teddy is amazing, also Checkers, Layla, Piper, heck they are all wonderful. Ours who typically don't like strangers (and Eli HATES any kind of sudden noise) will go up to people with walkers and wheelchairs. which we used to do when our dog club put on agility demos at the retirement homes. The folks were lined up at the perimeter to watch, and we'd all take our dogs around for people to pet. All of my Shelties absolutely rose to the moment and would allow petting by strangers with odd contraptions. Made me proud also.

Not that I like to brag on Teddy (I do I love him dearly.) He probably saved my life this morning.
At 1 am I was asleep in my chair and he jumped on me and licked my face, I made him get down but he repeated this 3 times. I got up and didn't feel real good so I took my BP and it was way out of sight 220/127. After talking with my wife, I called the squad and went to the ER , were I found out my sugar was also very high. They patched me up and I see my Doctor Tuesday. Since I have been home Teddy has not left my side. I had my wife give him some steak as a treat this evening. :)
