Heartbroken Newbie

Thank you..
Is it common in the grieving process to regret the decision? I actually called the vet up and asked if it could be reversed. I knew it couldn't be, but.. I thought maybe..
How do you get past the pain ?

It is very common to regret the decision. We had to put Bonnie to sleep and I still cry about that horrible day. We honestly put it off for as long as we possibly could. And it was still wretched. And watching Clara look for her was pretty terrible too. Casey saved us the pain by leaving this world in the parking lot at the vet's one morning. It was equally terrible. And with him, I have the second thoughts of not rushing him to the an emergency vet when I woke up that morning. But the sad truth is the ER Vet is so far away, I would've gotten to the parking lot at the same time as waiting until our vet opened.

How do you get past the pain? Whew- that one's hard to answer. You cry. Then you cry. Then you sob. Then you cry some more. You push through day after day. And you cry. And sometimes, you get angry. And you hug your darling ones close. The rest of your dogs are probably grieving some too. You tell yourself that she isn't hurting anymore. And then you remind yourself that THAT part IS TRUE. And someday, you're able to come this part of the forum and help someone else whose heart is shattered. And it still hurts. But it hurts less. And eventually, it becomes bearable.

The choice you made for your Lady was the one last gift of love, the greatest gift, you could give her...to make sure she didn't suffer any longer. We all end up facing this decision at some point for every little soul we give our hearts to and it is a heartbreaking decision even when we know it is the right one.

Your Lady is now at peace, forever wrapped in the love she was given by you during her time here on earth. In time I hope you too can find some peace in knowing that you did your best for her and in remembering all the wonderful times you shared.

I am so deeply sorry for your loss.

Trini

thank you so much

And our er vet is 45 minutes away. Pretty girl held on for us. Wretched.. yea, that's a great way to put it..

I am so deeply sorry for your loss of your lovable Lady, with the most wonderful eyes.

It is so painful to lose our faithful best friend, we have fortunately no idea how hard it really is.

I have been through it this pain for 10 months. ago, so I really feel with you.

Can not write it better than Ann:
Do not let anyone tell you "it's just a dog" - you've lost a family member. Do not feel guilty about grieving as you would for a person - these precious pups take up a huge space in our lives and hearts.

Thank you..

What a beautiful sheltie. I am so sorry for your loss.
Never ever doubt that your decision wasn't the right one. She is free of any pain or illness now. You gave here the best years of her life when you took her from the Shelter and she was a happy little girl who was always loved and cared for by you.
I hope in time the pain of losing her gets easier and you are left with only happy memorys xx

Thank you so much. She was so beautiful and equally loved. It hurts so much.

Give yourself time to grieve. Cry. Cry a lot. It helps you get past the pain.

We've been through this 4 times and each time is just as hard as the last. Our dogs have always let us know when it's time for them to go as did your Lady, but the decision is never easy. You gave her peace when she had none. You took on her pain without regard to your own. How can that be the wrong decision?

Our non-pet-owning friends always ask us how we can put ourselves through that, because we know it's inevitable. I always tell them that the pain at the end can never erase a dozen (or more) years of love and companionship.

4 times? Yea, I have 4 more.. doesn't get easier I'm sure.. I love your phrase of vs taking on her pain... thank you so much.

Blessings on your family. I think you did what was best. Prolonging life sometimes doesn't make sense, and so you let them go physically, but she will always be there in your memories. She was a beautiful girl, that picture was precious, such a sweet face. Take time to grieve, it is a process and only time will dull the ache. So many of us had to make that decision, and it is a hard one. I don't think it gets easier, and most of us understand what you are living. Be kind to yourself in this fragile time.

I believe we get reunited with our pets, if I didn't I would CRACK up because they were so dear to me. When I see pictures of my former girls, I still tear up because they were family, and they are truly missed.

Wishing you hugs and peace in this difficult time.

Thank you. She was a sweet girl. Such a lover and a joker. Her presence in the house is missed so much. The whole days is just a blur. Grieving won't be hard.

For what it is worth, i would have done the same thing. The hardest part is she perked up with oxygen but how long would that have lasted if you brought her home?

I am currently in the end of life stages with my beloved 15 1/2 year old dog so i will soon be able to relate too well. Yes it is normal doubt and second guess yourself.... Regardless of whether you did or didn't put her to sleep. To help me cope i have googled pet loss and grieving and deciding to euthanize and there are some good sites and psych articles on the topic that have helped me.

So sorry

Hello Lady 2015, welcome to the Sheltie Nation, I am so very sorry we have to meet under these sad circumstances. When that time comes in every family, we all have the same doubts and fears as you, but you can know that you did the absolute kindest thing you could have done for your baby and took away all her pain. There is no way for anyone to tell you how you must grieve or for how long, each person grieves in their own way. Unfortunately there is no way to put a time frame on this for you, your sweet little baby was such a big part of your family and the loneliness that you will experience will be there as long as you need it to be, there is no one thing right for everyone. Our little babies are all such funster and clowns and brought so much joy to our lives that one day in the future, you will think about a memory of your little Lady and you will realize that you smiled instead of cried, that is the point when your healing will begin. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.
