Hello from Domino

We are in Calgary, Alberta, but these pictures were taken in Banff - only an hour's drive away. We are very lucky to live so close to such beautiful mountains.

JusticeMom- yes he is a bi-blue. It is hard to tell from most of his pictures as he only has patches of grey on the one side but he does have one blue eye as well.

Domino is absolutely beautiful, as is the scenery in your pictures. You are so lucky to live in such a fantastic place!

Domino is so beautiful. It's so interesting how half of him looks bi-black and the other half is bi-blue. I love the bi-blue coloring but don't see it all that much in Shelties. More in Aussies.

Anyhow. I wanted to write to give you some help on the fetch/toys thing. Koji wasn't much into toys. However, he loved to fetch. The best way to teach them to fetch is to have them watch another dog. I know my breeders Shelties didn't know how to and she was amazed that my older Sheltie knew how (from her line also). So, we taught her group, by having them watch Miko. Miko also showed Koji how to fetch.

Once Koji knew how to fetch, we noticed he liked to chase more than tug. So, that's when you get a snake like toy, and wiggle it on the ground, most dogs seem to like that. The tugging, seriously, took us years to get Koji to do. And we only did that because we wanted him to have "drive" for agility for toys, not food.

I know my XH started with grabbing at Miko's paws to get him to play. Which progressed into teasing with hands, then keep away with toys. It's a process. See what actions gets Domino excited. Once you get that, you can use those same actions, with toys.

Both Koji and Miko are the types of dogs that you have to play with constantly if you want to play. They won't play by themselves.

Good luck.

That's a really interesting idea. I have been taking Domino to an Off-Leash area next to our house and he has made quite a few friends that love to fetch. I have noticed that he will run after the other dog if they are chasing a ball...so I know he likes to run and chase other dogs if they are chasing a ball. So maybe if I keep this up and let him observe the other dogs playing with their balls and ropes he will start to mimic their behaviour.

Thanks everyone for such great suggestions...I have alot to try out now. I am starting to realise that I have lots of options to try but in the end it's down to Domino and if he just isn't interested it's not the end of the world. He doesn't need toys to be happy...we can find other ways to play together!
