Help Save Zippy Texas

I just had some recent correspondence with an Austin Sheltie Rescue volunteer and she has checked in on Zippy and he is doing fine and still at Lockhart. She also confirmed that ASR cannot take Zip at this point because he is older and heartworm positive and he would most likely be a forever shelter rescue. All of the folks at ASR are wonderful as I’ve exchanged emails with many of them over the past month, and the decisions they have to make are so very difficult. They save many many shelties every year but still have to work within the recourse they have.

The volunteer I talked to said she will be checking in on Zip and keeping me posted on his situation. Zip has drawn a lot of attention (good for him), so let’s hope and pray that he will find his new home. We're still working to find a foster in the Austin area.

That is exactly what I wanted to do! Draw attention to poor Zippy. A writer for a Michigan paper that has a soft spot for senior dogs dumped in pounds also contacted people in Austin about Zippy. Somebody from here posted him on Austin craigslist too. I must have emailed ten rescues but nobody wants him. I was hoping somebody would get him and I am still hoping and praying for Zip.
Thank you for caring about Zippy.

I am happy to hear that more and more folks are finding out about Zippy.

I am continuing to pray for Zippy and that someone will rescue him and give him that forever home he so much deserves.

Well, at least the shelter in Lockhart knows we're trying to find a spot for Zippy. I just renewed the Austin craigslist post so maybe it will catch someone's attention. Are there any Sheltie clubs near there that might have someone with a soft heart & room for him in their lives? It's great to know someone from the rescue is checking on him. Maybe there's hope yet.

How much does it cost to fly a dog somewhere? What if we raised the money to fly him to someone that wants him. And asked a rescue to just transport him to the airport?

I’ve also been looking into this. Here’s one of the pet transport airlines I found (i'm sure there are more):

Looks like a long distance flight would be between 500 – 1000 depending on how tall Zip is. The short distance flight is 99 to 233, which isn’t bad. These folks also offer a 50% discount for rescue relocations (they have some forms for this, as I would expect). I one issue I found is they have limited flight times and very limited cities. They currently don’t fly into Texas but they said on their website that new stops have been announced and Austin was one of them.

Interesting. I'm in Atlanta. I wonder if that would be considered short or long distance. That is one of the cities listed. The difference in cost between short/long flights is considerable.
We should start a sanctuary for old Shelties.

Zip is going to rescue tomorrow

I am overjoyed to pass along this email I just received from the director of Austin sheltie Rescue.

“A follow-up note to the one this morning. We have found a foster for Zippy and I will be going to the shelter tomorrow to pick him up, get him back to Austin and assess his condition. I’ll send you pictures after I get him back to Austin.”

Truly an answer to prayer, Zip is going to rescue. Thank you, Thank you ASR !!!, and thanks for all the support here at Sheltie Nation.

Let’s hope all continues to go well as they will be evaluating he condition and HW+ status.
