Hepatic Encephalopathy???

I am so sorry Barb, know that you both are in my prayers and sending lots of love and good thoughts your way

I'm so so sorry to hear about Bacca. I don't have any advice, but am sending you positive thoughts and keeping both of you in my prayers. Having recently experienced something similar with Juliet and her not being able to get up, I totally feel your pain. Big hugs from us. :hugs

So sorry Barb, thinking of you and Bacca and praying for some solution. :hugs

I wish I had some magic words of wisdom for you, but all I can think to say is hang in there, we're all here for you. <3

Seeing Sadie suffer her stroke at less than 3 years of age and watching her struggle with being paralyzed was one of the most traumatic things I've seen, so I have an idea how you feel.

She too struggled with hardwood floors after it happened so I put rubber Muttluk boots on her back feet to give her traction. She still has issues with the floors when she's very tired and always has trouble with stairs.

Good suggestion on the boots. A little hot for summer but I have socks at the store with rubber treads. That might work

My lab jo had HE with her chronic active hepatitis. I was not a vet at the time.

It came and went over the whole 4 yr I managed it. When she had a bad time , I need to take her in and flush the waste products out with IV or SQ fluids(I was taught to do this at home), she was on lactulose and antibiotics(I am pretty sure she was on Neomycin) but most of the time I could keep it under control with the low protein diet(I used K/D because that was the only thing available at the time) as it really is the ammonia waste products that are the problem.

Her signs where head pressing, circling, depression, hind end weakness and anorexia. Her appetite always left when she was starting to get it.

I am sorry Bacca is having such a hard time. But if he is having the signs you are describing you really need to get him in for an exam ASAP. He may need fluid support for a short time and additional medications added. You get Lactulose rx from your vet. You really don't want to delay if this is what is happening if they get too depressed you may not be able to bring him out of it.

Sending thoughts and prayers. :hugs

Great advice. Thank you. I have a call in to the vet. He ate well this morning and I'm about to feed him dinner. He seemed a little more alert today. Actually ran to his breakfast.

I'd not heard about the Iv fluids. You were eventually able to do yourself. My net vet is an hour away.

The fluids are easy to give and not expensive. Your vet will show you how. You should take him in as Dr. Shelli suggested and get him evaluated and learn how to give the fluids and start the lactulose and antibiotic so that he isn't suffering with this. Glad he isn't feeling as bad today.

Barb... I'm very sorry to hear about what's happening with poor Bacca these days. I haven't been here for months, so I had no idea he was struggling with health issues.

I don't have any advice unfortunately. I don't know a thing about HE. I am however sending you and Bacca lots of positive thoughts and ((HUGS)). I sincerely hope that you can find some reasonable method to manage his condition at home and that you can enjoy many more years of his company.
