How Do You Teach "Back-up?"

Oh! really, no offense taken! Just trying to explain it a little better :wink2:

And I admit it! I am wired a little differently LMAO I am a training fanatic. I normally train 5 days a week (especially when school is in session) but a minimum of 3 days a week. I will drive 100 miles to attend classes if I am stuck.

With my 3 dogs and my friend who also has 3 dogs currently being trained plus students, many of those days end up being 6 hour long training days! :eek2:

I also tend not to be one that just trains to get the titles.... I am a Ribbon Junkie! I lust for those Rosettes lol  So while I may not get a 200, with the exception of fronts (which I have never figured out how to train to get perfect ones no matter what I try lol) I do aim for a 195 score and generally will not enter a trial if I don't have a shot at a 190's score (barring any "off" day lol). Kookie I know lol

I am brand new here and I don't know Ellie or her issues. I am so glad though that OP found a way that does work for her & Ellie :)

my issues with teaching back up by restricting forward movement/ putting pressure on the collar will be following- one, many dogs are sensitive to collar pressure. In our recallers seminar we were taught Collar grab game and were told to start very slowly, depending on the dog sometimes just by light touch. So I do use grabbing collar but it is a game, and in different context, my pups know collar grab means FUN and lotsa treats are coming. I use it as proofing for possibility of ever dog getting lost and being comfortable by being caught by the collar as well as revving dog by pulling on the collar back during other games.
Second and it is very important one- as my journey on dog training progressing I ALWAYS want dog to have a choice, so restricting forward motion by applying back tension to the collar is not something I will ever do.
I do want to control reinforcement the dog might get at the choice point made, i.e. if I drop cookie on the floor and my dog dives on it I will put my foot over cookie thus preventing my dog getting reinforced for naughty behavior. But it is his choice- either sit politely and see if fallen cookie comes into his mouth or dive on it and get no cookie:lol:

Yes, that is what I believe in as well. Well put, thanks Che!
I feel that if you don't give a dog the chances to do it wrong, they won't learn it's your choice, if that makes sense
