How much canned food do I feed?

That's how mine worked out too. 1/2 cup food = 2/3 can of wet. I gave Checkers 1/3 can twice a day.

Your math sounds about right.

Keep in mind that Koji may not eat well for the first few days after his surgery, so if he goes in carrying an extra pound or so, it may be lost if he loses his appetite.

I am feeding 15 yr old Wendell about 2/3 of a can at each meal (He weighs 27 lbs., but should weigh about 29), so I am trying to put weight on him. He lost 2 lbs. in the past month, (he has become very picky in his old age).

Good point. I can't imagine Koji not eating, uncomfy or not, but you never know. Keep an eye on Wendell's weight. I know with Miko, he started losing weight very fast when he got old and sick (but he had kidney failure). He could never keep any weight on, no matter how much food I was feeding him. He just kept withering away :(

I just looked at the Medi Cal Recovery wet food to see what it says. (Rhiannon, our Terv, is currently on it) According to the web site, a 25 lb dog should be receiving about 400 Kcal/day. That would be just over two of these cat sized cans of high caloric density food. It really depends on what you are going to be feeding and what it's caloric density is and what shape your dog is in, whether it is intact or altered. Call your vet for the info. They will work it out for you in kcals and then you can go find the right food to match.

Thanks everyone. I did call the vet, they suggested going by caloric intake. And like Sheltie4 said too, he may not be able to eat well, so maybe fatten him up a bit now. :) Oh, he's chubby.

On the upside, look at what I got the other day!!!

February is National Pet Dental Health Month, so it's a great time to think about keeping your pet's pearly whites healthy. Schedule your pet for a dental cleaning procedure and receive $25 off.
