How to get my Cali to chew her food?!

My Fox used to scarf his food down without chewing it first. Lots of gagging and chocking. I found a bowl called a "Brake Fast Bowl" Brake Fast dog bowl or "Dog Pause Bowl" Dog pause bowlIt has little raised humps in it that the dog must east around to get to the food. I makes them slow down and chew their food. I have had mine for about 8 months and Fox now eats slower and chews his food. It was the only thing I found that forced him to have to chew when he ate

I just ordered the Tug -A-Jug for Trapp. He has always inhaled his food, and from I have read here many of you here have shelties that do the same. We had noticed on several occasions after he ate, that he would belch, and seem uncomfortable after eating.
I especailly noticed his discomfort if I picked him up after he ate,he would let out a gulp of air.

Yesterday was a funky day with him. I fed him as I usually do,and he was perfectly normal after he ate. It takes him just seconds to inhale his food, but after a short period,he vomited his breakfast, undigested. The day continued,he played, slept, did not seem bothered that he had been sick..until supper time. And it happened again.

He seemed a little stressed about the incident, and actually slept on the couch until it was time for bed. When he did get up,he did every thing normal, played, but then he wanted to be up on the couch again. And just wanted me to comfort him.

I put him in bed with me last night,he slept perfectly fine.I'm about to feed him,but till this Tug-A-Jug comes,he will get his meals in much smaller portions.

From what I have read of those that have used this,it worked for you.I unfortunately gave my slow feed bowl to my son.

Smudge swallows EVERYTHING. He refuses to chew his food, treats, ect. I never hear a crunch. Then he licks his lips and looks at me to let me know he wants some more. :uhoh:

:biggrin2:

I haven't found anything good yet. I've tried the PetSmart version of some of the slow down bowls only to find that they don't work. They are made for a dog with a longer snout, but I thought Smudge was going to hurt himself trying to get the kibble out of the bowl. The EatBetter brand isn't any better. Those seem to be made for dogs with a small snout, like a pug. Smudge wizzes though that bowl like it's nothing. I could have bought two regular bowls for the price I paid for that one bowl. The dividers aren't deep enough. Also, that bowl makes it a headache to use my Vibrant Pets! All of the Vibrant Pets ends up at the bottom of the bowl, and I have to scoop it back up and find a way to entice Smudge to eat it! If I'm really evil sometimes I make him lay down or shake paws and try to pawn it off as a treat.

Interesting, I bought Sadie's bowl for slowing down eating at Petsmart and it worked like a charm. Her nose is very long and slender, almost collie like. She never hurt herself trying to get around the dividers. She did try mashing her nose into them the first couple of times she used it, but stopped when she realized it wasn't helping her eat any faster. Instead of inhaling her food in 30 seconds, it took her 3 minutes.

I'll see if I can post a video of the two different dog bowls and how they do. It might be a day or two before I post them though. Chow Hound Presents: Battle of the Bowls!

That's pretty much what it did for me with the PetSmart bowl: it only lasted a minute and a half max where it used to take him 30 seconds. The other bowl I mentioned is a complete joke. When I said I was afraid he would hurt himself I was mainly concerned about him scraping the side of his face trying to tear at the PetSmart bowl (because I bought that bowl right in the middle of all the fun mange!). Now that his face is healed except for one tiny little spot (that may or may not be a scar) I still won't use it. They don't do what they claim to do.

Also, those bowls are not fun to clean at all!

This is what I ordered today for Trapp. I re-read many past postings here, and this was mentioned on a few of them, and with good results. And every one seemed to like the way it worked.

After a terrible day yesterday with Trapp gulping, then getting sick afterwards,it was time to try to find some thing.I had givin my slow feed bowl to my son,so unfortunately I may not see it again.

Today I mostly hand fed him,to slow him down, and will probably have to continue until this arrives.I had debated on the Nina Ottoson's pyramid, but I really did not think I would want to hear that banging around on my floors every time he ate.
It's still on my wish list,if this does'nt work out.

Here is the photo:

It is very inexpensive, compared to the Ottoson toy,I think it will work just fine.

Tug A Jug~

The Tug-A-Jug came yesterday, and I was wondering if any one that has used it,what did you do to keep your pup interested in it?

I seem to be having Trapp get frustrated,as he cannot get his food out quick enough to eat. (I know that is the goal,to slow him down).

He's interested, but he jusy has'nt quite got the hang of it to get the food out.

I'm sure once he gets the jist of it,and what to do to get the food,he will love it,but yesterday,I had to take some food out to feed him from his Kong,so he could get something in his belly.

We'll see how this goes~If not I may end up going another route to feed him.

Well since FaceBook has totally changed on how or to whom your share photos with,I decided to give PhotoBucket a try.

Here are a couple of pictures I took this morning of Trapp trying to figure out how the heck he can get his food out of the Tug-A-Jug.

I think its just a matter of him figuring out that he needs to be a little more agreesive in tossing it around, and maybe learning to tip it to get the food.

I did'nt let him get frustrated,as I want this to be something fun,not just for feeding, but for other treat items. I really can see where this would keep any puppy busy for a very long time.

I still ended up feeding from his Kong, and taking some food, putting it on the floor for him,as he was hungry for breakfast~

Well lets try this one. Forgive me but I'm learning how to use this~

Step by step instructions..please till I know what I am doing. I'm so mad at FaceBook for changing thier sharing photos options!
