I didn't get the WAG option (non-wagging tail)

Yep interesting thread but it has me watching Sca's tail now. He is an all purpose wagger I think. Often there is zero wag, especially when he does the "what you doing buddy" stare. There is also the gentle swish, usually he is on the move but not running for this. Then the full wag for when he is ATTACKING mirror Sca or me. There is the tail balance for full running, frisbee and turns. Lastly there is tipup Sca which was a warning when he was a puppy, tail goes up and you might be to late to get him outside Still the tail goes up like a tipup for peeing

LOL. It's interesting what their tail says, isn't it?

This weekend, Koji had some visits. His tail did a massive wag (of about 8 wags total) for my FIL. He loves him. Then, his tail did another wag (total 4) for the woman that works at our daycare, except she was at my house. Me, still zero.

Koji does an S shape with his tail when he's peeing. It's silly. Even sillier that he's squatting. lol.

I'll have to watch it for more action. Especially when he's playing with Miko.

Zoey wags her tail for everything and nothing...
What cracks me up is that she also happens to be a wall hugger, so her tail keeps hitting the wall, it's hilarious.

Chloe is not a tail wagger, but Dandie's never stops. Chloe is just a sweetheart and wants to cuddle and be pet. Dandie wants no part of cuddling, and just wants to play play play.

So funny how different they all are.

Haha! Well, Treader hardly ever wags his tail. When he goes it looks pretty funny because his tail arches over his back 85% of the time and it just wiggles a tiny bit back and forth. He only seems to wag when he wants something.
Me: Want out?/(or)/Want to go for a walk?/(or)/hungry?
Treader: *has puppy eyes, whines a bit, and wags his trail*

I get more of a slow, side-to-side, wave from Miko... but that's about as good as it gets.

I must admit that I kind of like it. Furiously wagging tails are a major inconvenience. Things getting knocked off the coffee table... bruised legs (my dad's Boerboel could cut you down at the knees if she hit you just right!!).

Miko's clearly happy to see me... he's wiggling and turning and hopping... but his tail never really moves all that fast.

I was doing some yard work out front today so I opened the front window so Maggie and Zak could see and hear me. I almost about to come in so I walked up to the window to see where he was, and there he was with his head resting on the sill, when I spoke to him his tail started to wag softly side to side. It was so cute to see his face in the window.

I don't think Shelties are tail waggers, with few exceptions. I never really thought about it much before you asked the question, but I never really worry about my coffee table being sweeped!

I think a big part of this is genetics. Except when they are in motion (at which point, their tail is spread out), their tail is generally kept close and is supposed to lie flat against their rump. According to Sheltie Talk "When the dog is alert, the tai is normally lifted but should not be carried above the back"

I do think that it has a lot to do with personality (or maybe it's just how I perceive their personalities). The more subdued, one-person bitches aren't big tail-waggers (these are the girls who leave for a week to be bred and then snub you for a week after they come home). The party-girl social butterfly bitches (who leave for a week and come home like nothing happened - or who want to tell you how much more fun that other house was) are the waggers and shimmiers.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there...Thats how it works here too, the quieter ones are minimal tail waggers. Funny when Noah gets excited...mostly food related he honestly just cant contain himself you can see it coming and if you dont catch him in time its an all out body slam dancing montange Or his ball too...the two biggest highlights of his day...My mom had me laughing tonight she said she took them out to run today and Noah got his chuck-it ball stuck in a crevice of a snowbank, so she had to crawl up it since it was icy to get it she said yea great im going to break a leg and lay here until you come home from work but Noah will be happy because he has his ball!!!!

I should add that Indy doesn't tail wag, but he sure butt wriggles. One of these days I have to get him on video....if he was upright, I'm sure he could keep a hula hoop going!
