I feel so bad....

I've only done it once in my years trimming feet, and it was on Earnhardt.Oh what a terrible sight it was.

I remember he had just got a bath, and I decided to do his nails. They were nice and soft from being bathed. And did'nt I cut one to short.

I swear he bled like a stuck pig.I was in tears,he yelped so.I thought for sure it would ruin him from getting his nails done for years to come.

He ended up being put in the kitchen, with compresses to the foot,as I did not have any quick stop then.If someone were to come in that kitchen you would think a murder took place,so much blood came from that toenail.

I'm glad he is ok.Lots of hugs & treats.He'll be fine~

It's amazing just how much a small nail can bleed. I was doing Revel's earlier this year by our gate and cut two, something I've not done before and there was blood everywhere and what made it worse was that it was the school hometime, the children and mums were all walking past and I was looking like I was butchering the dog not trying to groom him:uhoh:
Thankfully the bleeding did stop eventually and he's not held it against me:razz: Our shelties are so forgiving:smile2:

Well, of course, I didn't have the Quik Stop handy since I don't need it with the dremmel....by the time I found it buried in the bottom of my grooming bag, Indy had run away from me and wouldn't come back for anything.....

(So close your eyes and picture this....a bleeding Sheltie doing circles around the kitchen table, trying to keep away from me.....several circuits later....and I finally catch him.....looked like there had been a murder in the house!)

It's all good....he's talking to me now....but I expect he won't be happy next time I go to do his nails. That's the worst part...they have these awful long memories. I just know I'm going to leg-irons to hold him down next time! :wink2::razz:

After I got Happy, he has all black nails and I was reluctant to cut them myself so I took him to a groomer. and didn't they cut one too short but didn't tell me- he jumps into the car ok and then I see blood on the back seat.....
never took him back there. I did break down and start cutting them myself- have Bamboo brand clippers with a little container for styptic powder in the handle- so always handy. would love to use the Peticure on Happy but he won't stay still for it like Callie does. I leave the clippers on the table near the couch and do one of Cranberry's paws when he visits me - two front done yesterday and today- two back to go over the weekend :wink2:

I have heard that if you don't have the quick stop to use flour. Does anyone know if that really works.

When I nicked Barkley, I tried flour, and bar soap ... all recommended by the emergency vet clinic on the phone. Nothing worked. But he might just have been nicked too deeply.

Per our vet another home remedy is the matchstick cauterization.

Light a match, let it burn a few seconds, blow it out, press it to the bleeding nail.

I have done thousands of nails over the years as I started as a vet asst then tech then vet. So I rarely knick nails anymore. First time I go to trim Diva's black nails, she jerks and Bam I get it. I felt like a heel. She was only 10 wks old. :( Now she only gets hers dremeled. I occasionly trim the others but Diva has never forgotten so I can't do a quick trim. Unfortunately her nails grow twice as fast as the other dogs.

I hate doing the black ones.

Never tried the dremel route. April has a fear of anyone touching her front paws, so I'm not sure I'd be able to get a dremel within a foot her nails. Chelsea used to keep hers worn down with the running she did, but April, liking the couch as she does, needs them done year round.

You and me both! I think a dremel is what I will ask for this Christmas.

I don't remember with my first sheltie, but do all adult dogs have black nails? Smudge still has some that are pink! Fluffy has mostly pink with a few black ones.
