I hate you, fireworks!

You have two options for solving the problem

1) Like SheltieChe said as soon as the bangs start you start singing and dancing and acting all jolly. You don't directly interact with the dog but make it clear fireworks are THE BEST sound I have ever heard, YAYYY!!!

Ok, you will appear crazy but it will help the dog.

2) Second option which I did with Cadbury when the Gala fireworks were going off, we went outside and I played fetch with him, lots of fuss for fetching the ball, again you getting excited, etc.

At New Year's he reacted to fireworks again so this time I started in the kitchen with door shut, had him focus on me and reward, gradually I opened the door then we worked until we were outside.

This year when we had fireworks on 5 November Cadbury was whinging, I thought he was scared, actually he wanted to come outside and see what we were up to. He watched the fireworks with us.

My trainer believes if you love fireworks your dogs will too. Her mum hates fireworks and all her mum's dogs hate them too. My trainer loves them and all her dogs (bear in mind only one she has had from a pup, the rest are rescues) love fireworks.

So, I guess the solution is to learn to love the bangs - or else just pretend you do for the dog's sake.

We were gone for the weekend to the in-laws out in the country. They were lighting fireworks all weekend. My poor Tiara got herself so upset that she lost her cookies. Angel however took it like a champ and for the most part slept.

Ok I love the fireworks!!! Keely hates them!!! How do I get her to love them too? We did survive it though! Last night they started at 8:30. The last one I heard at 11:30!!! Keely and I spent an hour or so in the bedroom doing some obedieince w/ air conditioner and a sound machine on (drowning out the noise). I saved her dinner (kibble) and put it in a treat ball and she and I played ball. I had fun. Didn't miss the fireworks. (I did miss the 12 people at my house in the pool watching the fireworks though)

I'm with you Ashley. I love fireworks. The bigger and more colorful the better. I do feel bad for the dogs though, but it's only once a year.

not here in the south- any holiday is an excuse for fireworks. I like the professional displays- could live without the rest- there's fireworks stands on practically every corner.
as for the pups- load'em all in the car and drive home on the 4th- no noise- some occasionally visible pretty starbursts and happy sleeping pups the whole way

It rained here last night yay! Our problem was Saturday night. I think everyone in the neighborhood had at least some fireworks. Now don't get me wrong I like fireworks but my boys not so much. Fireworks went off for hours so that meant I had barking, running around shelties for hours. It's raining here right now so hopefully if they have any left they won't be setting them off tonight either. But then there's always tomorrow night(sigh).

Poor Fluff! She's had a bad time for the last two nights. You can hear the fireworks over my air conditioner, the tv, and some box fans. She trembles in fear, and won't leave my side. She usually follows me everywhere, but she will venture off sometimes. Not last night or tonight. Smudge was barking at them. The stress level is high.

I hate my redneck neighbors and the fact that they wanna shoot off some fireworks, y'all! There were two FREE fireworks displays yesterday at the Ashdown park and the Texarkana park. That's a good distance away.

That's only part of my 4th of July drama. This morning when I went outside to go to work I saw an armadillo in our yard! I named it Pillow the armadillo. While it was cute and funny, I don't want those things in my yard. If anybody knows of a way to keep armidillos out of your yard PLEASE let me know ASAP! The last thing I need is Smuff ganging up on one and getting hurt. I have read that they can transmit rabies, but it is not very common for them to do so. However, this only makes me more anxious to go back to the vet so Smudge can hurry up and get his rabies shot. Appointment is hopefully next Monday, but I won't know until Tuesday.

Where do people get all this money to waste on big bang noises! I

I ask the same question!!! Some of the people around here have houses that are falling apart. (im not judging them) but they have hundreds of dollars to spend on fireworks?????? I just dont get it.!!! And I dont appreciate them going off near my home or over my home... with this dry spell...... I wonder if some people have any brains left.

I was shocked that my pup Snickers wasnt really bothered by the fireworks ... the M-80s and other really loud ones he really didnt like but then again when they go off they scare me as well...lol.

I've got a FREE armadillo I am willing to give to you, even though I haven't seen him since. I will include a free collar and leash. He has not been genetically tested for leprosy or rabies. Yes, armadillos actually do carry leprosy! I've heard that it is rare for them to give it to humans though.

LOL in Times Square they do, but not in the other boroughs of NYC. They'll have fireworks randomly in the summer at the beach or minor league baseball stadium, but not near my house. I've only heard fire works on the 4th of July here.

For a good chunk of the summer we are in a burn ban, which means that it's so dry from not having any rain that you can't burn anything, like trash, in your yard until the ban is lifted. It's an easy way to start a fire anyway, whether you have a burn ban or not.

That brought back a memory. I grew up in Rapid City SD. Fireworks are legal in SD but not in the Black Hills National Forest. Rapid City sits right on the edge of the forest so they are suppose to be illegal there too. One year, I think I was 12 or so it was so dry that you could start a fire by just looking at the ground. The cops really busted down on home fireworks after several fires were started . However, many of the public displays were still going to happen. My family decided to go up to Leadto my dad'd brother's house in the Black Hills. Lead was home to the Homestake Gold mine and they were having a display in the open cut(surface mining area). My uncle house was on the opposite side of the valley so the fireworks would be also at eye level. While we were waiting my cousins and I past the time throwing firecracks into a metal gabage can. Smart Uh? Our parents told us not to soot any. Well, the cops came and took all our fireworks and issued a fine to my uncle. Then the fireworks display started they would shoot off one or two and then a fire would start on the edge of the cut and they would stop and the trucks would run up the hill and put out the fire. This happened about 4-5 times before they canceled the rest of the show.

I do believe that was the last 4th I every have personal fireworks in my life. They were banned at my parents house after I worked off my part of the fine.
