I Nearly Killed Layla

Truth to tell, I'm still not over it. Yesterday I was finally able to go see the place where my sister found Layla. I still cannot believe she was able to get that far down a very steep hill. Of course, Layla can't figure out what all the fuss is about. She is unharmed, but she looks like a wreck because they shaved her legs. On Wednesday, we're planning to go to Walter Reed for our last visit marking Layla's official retirement from the Walter Reed Red Cross Therapy Dog Pack. She's the senior and longest serving dog in the pack, having been on the team for 15 years.

Fantastic 15 year accomplishment for Layla...she certainly has brought so much comfort and love to so many...bless her gentle heart.

Chris, time will help you to put to rest much of the frightening emotions that were a part of Layla's escape...but I don't think we ever get 100% beyond those feelings. Maybe that is just part of the often jarring learning process that life hands us. Thank goodness there was such a happy ending to her "adventure".

My vet describes Shelties as stoic. Layla is one stoic little soldier! I know she will be celebrated and honored for her service! Please send along pictures when you can. She was not going to miss her big day!

Congratulations to you and Layla for all those years of service, Chris. I’m sure you brightened many days for our soldiers. I hope there’s a retirement party for Layla, she’s earned it!

of course you haven’t forgotten her little wander, that’s totally understandable. What a fright you had! I hope those feelings fade and you can just be happy that she’s fine. What a wonderful resilient girl she is!

Such a wonderful dog and wonderful service to our beloved vets!
I know its hard, but live in the moment like Layla does. She is fine and holds no grudges.
(I understand how you feel--I titled a post "Worlds worst sheltie mom" last year. Can't undo it, can only make today and tomorrow a good day for dogs!)

OM Gosh, that is scary and easy enough to do. Layla's age may make her frail, but it probably also helped her - she is smart, I don't think it was a mistake where you found her, I think she carefully found a safe and warmer space and knew you'd find her.

I left Tully at the dog club one night, when I eventually realised I couldn't then get to her because of night roadworks blocking the route. Luckily our winters aren't as cold as yours.

But I must say, the look on Layla's face says you aren't a bad mum.

That’s just amazing Chris...15 years of helping people...the smiles she’s brought to so many people!
There’s a lady here who has a 4 year old Sheltie she takes to the hospital to bring relief and happiness to the staff as well as visits an adult care centre for those with developmental disabilities and I’m just in awe of the happiness her dog brings to people!
