I Nearly Killed Layla

Oh Lordy. What a nightmare! I will be extra vigilant tonight just on general principal.
I am so happy it all ended well, and you are NOT the worst sheltie Mom ever!

Speaking of making mistakes with your dogs, a while back someone here posted a fairly long post copied from someone else that basically stated trust is your dogs worse enemy...
Does that sound familiar to anyone? A lady in the neighborhood let her dogs out of the car off lead to go into the house and one of them went after a bobcat and got shredded. Dog is alive, but full of stitches and may lose an ear. I wanted to post those words of wisdom to our whole neighborhood group.
I think of that trust post often- kinda wanted to print it and give it to someone I know....
this person was putting the 2 dogs in the car but went from house to car without leashes on them- one decided not to go to car and some time passed before the dog was safely in the car....

Chris, I cried reading your post, because I can imagine how you felt. You are not the only one who has had an experience like this. I've been known to miss one in the dog yard from time to time and see a little face at the door a bit later. My greatest fear is leaving one outside when I'm leaving the house. Because of that, I always count heads before I go out, just in case. We are human, and it's so easy to get distracted.

You are a wonderful dog mom, and the fact that Layla is fine after her experience proves that. Cuddle your girl and enjoy her. Layla knows how much you love her, and she knew that you would find her. Sending you many hugs. :hugs

I was just in SHOCK reading your post! With a title like that, I was scared and crying before I reached the end. St Francis was guiding everyone's steps to save sweet Layla. I swear I held my breath as you described when you found her and how you rushed her into the vet. Sleeping next to her gave her strength. I know you are feeling so blessed she is with you.

Truth to tell, I'm still not over it. Yesterday I was finally able to go see the place where my sister found Layla. I still cannot believe she was able to get that far down a very steep hill. Of course, Layla can't figure out what all the fuss is about. She is unharmed, but she looks like a wreck because they shaved her legs. On Wednesday, we're planning to go to Walter Reed for our last visit marking Layla's official retirement from the Walter Reed Red Cross Therapy Dog Pack. She's the senior and longest serving dog in the pack, having been on the team for 15 years.

Layla is a tough cookie. What a wonderful career and calling she's had, to comfort the soldiers. I hope they give her a big party to celebrate.

I imagine it will take you a while to get over the shock and adrenaline spike of that night, Chris. It would have rocked my world for sure.
Congrats to Layla and you for her service.
