If you didn't own shelties...

Growing up I always thought I'd end up with a Golden Retriever. But a rough Collie or GSD would do fine also. I like Border Collies too, but I don't think I could keep them busy enough for them to keep out of trouble.

I would probably always stick with a herding breed.

But those little butterfly dogs are hilarious - what characters, they are as crazy as shelties! I would be really tempted just because they have that fun loving personality of a sheltie - but there are a bit small for me.
 
Border Collie....like alot of others here!

They are such good looking dogs and so smart too...but I just can't meet their needs.

And of course shelties are still number one!:yes:
 
I think I can handle a border collie...sometimes I think Bailey is a border collie hidden inside a cute, little sheltie.

I really wanted a Shiba Inu. I think they are so cute. I was very close to getting a Shiba puppy. I changed my mind after researching them and reading that possessiveness is a big problem with them.

I also always wanted a Husky. I think they're gorgeous. If I was going to get a large dog, I would definitely look into golden retrievers. For little dogs, I really like Havanese and Coton De Tulea. They are such cute balls of fur.

However, if I wasn't going to get a sheltie, I would get a rescue dog. No preference on breed. Just a fantastic personality and temperament.
 
I think the coolest part about this thread is that our "alternate picks" reflect what each of us, individually, loves best about our Shelties... our choices are all so different, and that's really neat.

I completely agree, AND I also like that we all know what we should and should not have for a furry best friend..

I know exactly what you mean! I never thought I could handle one, but after living with Phebe, the Rocket Sheltie, for a year, I'm certain I could. But, you know what stops me? Two out of 3 dogs at the Agility center are BCs. I want my dog to be different from everyone else's. :razz:
