illegal Tic collars

We have found the Preventic collar to be not only the best, but I think I speak for the majority of both veterinarians and owners in our area, the ONLY effective tick preventative available.
As mentioned before, the new spot product Certifect combines the active ingredient of the Preventic with flea prevention, so holds promise. We shall see.
Again, any effective medication has the potential for risk, which is always a consideration. However, just as we should avoid denial of possible problems, we should also avoid overly alarmist rhetoric.

We are going to the vets today, maybe I will mention this collar. We are tick infested here, and a dog getting Lyme disease is very serious. But can you use the collar with the frontline? Isn't it one or the other? Frontline works, but Sandstorm still will occasionally have a few ticks.

Our vet put Jake and Brandy on the Preventic collar last summer, when Brandy got a tick on her eyelid, and the head broke off trying to remove it. (We have a lot of deer milling around here, hence, lots of ticks too.) Neither have had a tick since.

They were already on Revolution, but it only protects against american dog ticks, while the collar has a broader range.

Bummer they're illegal in Canada, is there a penalty for having one on your dog, or they just can't be sold there?

they just are not sold here :( i don't think anyone would know the difference if i got one it could be any tic collar you can purchase here in canada, they just are not good collars since our province still believes we do not have any tics and they need to get their heads out of their %^$... ugh

I can't comment on the effectiveness of the collar or the potential side effects, because I have never used it, but my veterinary behaviorist did say not to use this collar while my dog was prescribed anti-anxiety medication (Reconcile -AKA doggie prozac).

So if you do decide to use a tick collar or any other flea/tick preventative, make sure your vet is aware of all the medications (natural and/or prescription) that your dog is currently taking.

I wonder if it is banned because of the effect on our waterways. There are a number of horse sprays that are really good but not allowed to be sold in Canada for just this reason. As we all know, there are a lot of people that would not remove the collar when the dog goes in a lake even if they are told to.
I'll have to ask my vets if they know the reason for the ban here.

Hi Guys,

... but my vet also stated they are illegal in Canada because of the chemicals.

Um, no, they're not illegal in Canada. My vet's office sells them. I live in Ontario. I think you might have misunderstood your vet or maybe they're just illegal where you are?.

Some flea and tick preventatives, like Frontline and Frontline Plus are not available in Canada but the Preventic Collar isn't one of them.

I bought them for my dogs last year, they're great. I haven't bought them yet this year but I saw a lady buying them at my vet's office just last week.

My vet isn't a fan of all of the chemicals, especially most of the spot ons, however she feels that the Preventic Collars are safer, less toxic and more effective than may other tick treatments.

The article I said it varies by province, could that be it?

Could be, but I haven't been able to find anything saying that.

I do know Ontario in the past couple of years has really cracked down on the chemicals and pesticides that are available (pretty much nothing toxic anymore). I find it hard to believe that with these tougher laws the Preventic Collar would still be available here but not in other provinces.

Still looking though...
