Im doing something wrong.

Cassie's Mom: Be careful with the canned veggies! They can have way too much salt content. Frozen green beans may be a good choice.

Also...be aware of any dog foods that "look" pretty. The food dyes used to make them look appetizing to the human eye, are not necessarily good for the dog.

We have pole bean plants growing up my deck railing. My Shelties, run out to the plant every more and search for the green beens, and pick them and it them. It is awesome. Well....not that awesome, because they never leave any for the rest of the family, but I thought that was very smart! My daughter taught Vinca that trick a couple of years ago, and Chloe caught on. So....raw beans are great for them, and are not hard on their tummies.

Off Subject of the Thread: After McKinley Mess Maker and Teddy the Terror went through the garden here a couple of weeks ago...............we had NO green or yellow beans left and the cherry tomatoe plant was bare from puppy height down. They love them....................McKinley is headed for the green bean diet soon after the vet's "round boy" comment the other day.

On subject of the thread: Ann on the forum is very knowledgable of food for shelties as well. But everyone here has given you great advice so far too. Ron and I are learning more about feeding correctly every day.

Good luck with you pups and keep us posted.

Danisgoat... Hmmm... makes me think about her Beneful dinner. It doesn't look like they added a dye. I intend to call her vet. doctor tomorrow and ask what she recommends for dinner.

I wonder how long the Green Bean Diet been around. Because an owner of this vet. clinic, who treated our deceased sheltie Candy, never told us about this diet. Candy was a big sheltie but overweight too. We never heard from the owner 4.5 years ago about a diet.

I truly was afraid to give Cassie raw beans. We found canned green beans that has 50% reduced salt. I am going to talk to her doctor tomorrow.

Thank you Danisgoat. Good advice!!!

Not sure if the Beneful dinners are the same there as they are in Aust. But if they are they do have a lot of sugar - so just double check the calories. I gave it to mine once and never again, their poo stank to high heaven!

We have to fit 600 calories per day for Cassie, for everything, including snacks. We make it!!
I give her 1/2 Beneful pouch, not full.

But I am going to talk to the doctor tomorrow. She is the one told us about a Green Bean Diet, and Cassie has a normal weight thanks to the dr.
:biggrin2:

I never knew that! I tried feeding Gizmo some Beneful when it was fairly new. He sniffed it and walked away. Why would they put sugar in dog food?! :eek2:

green beans, or green peas

I ran out of frozen green beans so fed mine frozen green peas, now she won't touch the beans! Are green peas ok?

Now... our situation is different .. I took Cassie to the vet yesterday to find out if Beneful and canned green beans are OK for her (I watch Cassie's health very closely).

What the doctor said was because we give her "Urinary" dry food to reduce the acidity ("yellow" grass after her pee), she should NOT get any more food like Beneful. In her case Beneful dinners (any other dinners) will mess up this acidity diet.

As for green beans dr. said it was OK canned beans (we found 50% less salt kind), but the receptionist told me that frozen green beans are better. So I am still undecisive.

Beneful is not up there in terms of good food for dogs. I tried to go to Dog Food Analysis site, but its down for maintenance at the moment.

I think pups would prefer frozen to canned. My guys like the crunch of fresh or frozen veggies better. I think your pups may be eating the canned because of the sodium content.

Peas are fine too, as are carrotts, but I'm not sure if either serve the same purpose as providing low calorie "bulk". But I'll leave that to our dietary experts! :smile2:
