I'm messing up his potty training :(

I agree; I would rule out a UTI. Also is the crate the correct size? If it is too big can you add a partition?

I know that you're frustrated (I've certainly had my share of those days) but mini-set backs can happen. Eventually your fur baby will develop control over his sphincter muscles and you will be able to trust him.

Wishing you both success!
Kimberly

I thought it was the correct size, but I have made it smaller again to make sure. He looks very snug now  He is a large puppy for 11 weeks old, already 12 inches at the shoulder so I hope he's not too cramped.

Would he be showing signs of pain during urination with a UTI? He seems to be perfectly normal, very hearty appetite, playful, happy etc, not seeming to be in pain when he wees.

I took him out 20 mins ago and he had a wee. He started to whine in his crate 10 mins later which he doesn't normally do so I took him out again to be sure and he had another wee. That was without drinking in between wees.

I would get him checked.
If I want to be sure that Jocu has done everything he needs, I usually have to take him out by himself. He gets so excited sometimes when he sees the big dogs, that he forgets to finish. He was pooping the other morning, saw Cranberry come back to the door and ran after him. thinking they were both done, we went in and I started getting their breakfasts ready, turned around and poo on the floor.....
so put them all in their crates with their bowls and cleaned up....

over the weekend, each dog got yard time by themselves- I didn't watch the big dogs out there so I could keep an eye on the puppy inside and then outside.
he does very well with peeing on command when we go out but poo is not as predictable.

I am definitely not a vet ... when Piper had her UTI she never showed any signs of pain during urination but she was licking herself quite a bit

Please keep us updated,

I always take him out on his own to potty otherwise he thinks it's playtime with Darla.

He's been crying more tonight, not sure whether it's because his crate is smaller (he has room to lie down, turn around etc) or because he is suffering from a uti  I will call the vet tomorrow to make an appointment.

Thanks for all your replies. I will let you know what the vet says.

Edan's had a few UTIs over the years and never showed any pain when urinating just a constant need.

When I was reading this thread I kept thinking UTI as well. The frequency just seems to be over the top even for a young dog.

My dog had a a few UTI's as puppy. At first I thought her having to urinate every 20 minutes was a behavioral issue, but after she urinated in her crate while she was eating, I realized it's probably a health issue. Other than frequent urination, she didn't have any other symptoms. She was a playful hungry puppy.

Although, even after antibiotics to treat her UTI she still had accidents. Turns out her urine wasn't acidic enough, so we started giving her a daily vitamin c pill, which took care of the problem.

When you bring in a urine sample to the vet, try to catch his first urine of the day before he eats food or drinks water. That is the best urine for the vet to test.

Just to add, I found with Merlin feeding him a puppy food which was in jelly or gravy caused him to wee near constantly. I changed to a different, dryer food and this worked wonders.

Merlin came to me paper trained, and I kept puppy pads down for a while as a safety net. This avoided me getting frustrated, especially as he did catch me out a few times with when he wanted to go.

I could tell you some housetraining dramas, like the night I took Merlin to a puppy party before I went with Cadbury to agility training. Merlin was put in a crate in my trainer's office. A short time later he was making a heck of a noise and when we went in not only had he messed in the crate but he had gotten it all over himself, the underneath of my trainer's desk and even on her fan!:ick

That was a serious clean up job, but despite that Merlin improved and is fine in the house. So your little guy will get through this too.

I have been mixing in a few teaspoons of wet into his dry food for him. Think I will stop that now.

I just let him out for a wee and he went and I stayed out there with him for 20 mins to make sure he was all done. I brought him back into the kitchen and turned my back on him for a few seconds to open his crate and put a new toy in there. When I turned back to pick him up I found he had done a poo and had chomped it :confused2:

I'm ill at the moment with the flu, so I know I'm grouchy and irritable and probably not on top of everything as I should be, but I'm finding him so hard to cope with. It seems I take my eyes off him for a second and he's gone to the toilet again inside or eaten his poo.

I made his crate as small as possible but he will still wee in it and I'm sure he's had a poo or 2 that he has eaten inside there too.

I will try and praise him when he goes outside but the second I say good boy he will stop mid pee and run over to me excitedly. I'm now saying good boy after he pees and that may be why he hasn't caught on at all, he thinks I'm saying good boy to him for running back to me. He's totally confused and I'm sure he's not even trying to hold it, he will go when the urge hits him. And that's because I haven't trained him to hold it and I'm messing up big time.

I know accidents happen, it did with Darla who wasn't crate trained but who was very easy to potty train. I know I have to give him time to mature and give him plenty of opportunities to get it right, but most days I feel like we are taking steps backwards instead of forwards, no matter how many times I let him out. Yesterday he had more accidents inside than good potties outside, and that's with me taking him out every hour and watching him.
