I'm messing up his potty training :(

No blankets. Many pups like a soft surface to go on. Have you been staying with Hugo when you take him out to pee ? Maybe take him to the spot where Darla pees. Keep in that spot, use a leash and just keep walking him on that spot til he goes. Are you feeding a good quality of food ? One that makes you go ouch when you pay ? Might help with eating the bms. Just throwing some ideas out there. He sure is a little cutie.

Ok, I will do away with the bedding. The last thing I want is for him to think soft things are things to be peed on. We always watch him potty outside and reward him with a treat and praise. He has even started to fake a wee to get the treat! I've noticed he doesn't usually return to the same spot to wee, he is happy to go anywhere outside in the garden, but not on walks :confused2:

He is on Pro Plan ATM which is high in grains so lotsa poo, about 6 a day! I'm transferring him to Applaws and will be making the slow switch in a week or so, so I hope to see a difference. He is constantly ravenous, will inhale the food in seconds so I just don't think it's doing anything for him and he's eating his poo as he is really hungry. The vet said that was normal puppy behaviour, my gut says otherwise.

Thank you very much for all your ideas, I will provide an update as to how he does minus the bedding. He is a cutie, and such a happy little guy, but I think he has the potential to be a right mischief maker!

Ok, I really think I'm messing up my pup's potty training now as he doesn't seem to understand that I want him to go potty outside and not on the kitchen floor. I cannot be teaching him right and I'm worried that if whatever I'm doing wrong carries on he'll become used to going inside. He's only 11 weeks old, I know I can't expect too much from him but I'll try my best to outline the major issues we have.

I crate train him at night, which he is doing really well with. He has had a few wee accidents at night, but I think that is because I just haven't got down to him fast enough in the morning. My alarm will wake him up and he'll often pee like lightening as it's always a fresh one. I thought setting my alarm 30 mins-1 hour earlier may help?

In the day (I work from home) he is free to roam the kitchen with my 1 year old sheltie. They play and have a great time together and he's kept inside the kitchen with the use of a baby gate. I take him out every hour during the day, reward him for doing potty outside whilst I watch and I take him out straight away after playing. Darla my one year old seemed to catch on fast with going outside, she would even whine to go, but Hugo will go inside, even inbetween the hours that I take him out to potty. The other day he went 3 times in the space of 20 mins! I think he was playing alot with Darla that day and he just couldn't hold it.

When accidents happen, I send them off outside and mop up the floor without a fuss so it doesn't draw attention to it. I thought he had stopped having poo accidents until recently when I found remnants of poo on the kitchen floor. He has pooed inside and eaten it, with perhaps the help of Darla. Today I actually caught him in the act, after he had been outside to potty 10 mins previously, and he was trying to eat it. I said 'leave' and sent them both outside so I could clean up.

He's had a full vet check, no UTI and the vet just said some pups eat their poo implying not much I can do. But is this common for them to poop inside and then eat it? He never does it in front of me, I only caught him on the off chance as I set up a camera in the kitchen which allowed me to spy on them. I had given him several chance to poop beforehand but he didn't seem interested, he just sat down outside and stared at me. I'm not sure whether he doesn't like going in front of me, Darla is a bit like that. Mostly because she wants to eat it or she thinks I will pick it up and take it away for myself. So these indoor poos are never done in my presence and the evidence is always swiftly cleared away, leaving a few tell tale traces.

Now, should I be crating him for an hour or so at a time during the day too to help potty train? The reason I haven't done this is because he loves playing with Darla and snuggling with her during the day. But this could also be causing the large amount of wees too as he is constantly playing and excited, making it very hard to keep on top of his weeing schedule.

I've read that pups under 12 weeks really don't have much control over their bladders, so I do feel sorry for him and I know it's not his fault at all. I just don't want to confuse him and make this a huge issue.

I'm super late to thep arty on this one....but...

When my little guy was just a pup I bought this potty bell at Walmart. And I hung it on the door that we would go out to potty with. Every time I took him out (and at 6 months old it was every couple of hours) I would ring the bell and say "POTTY TIME!" while I took him out.

It took a while but soon my pup was ringing the bell to go outside. At first he was being a jerk and not going potty...so I had to stand out there for AGES and wait until he went potty before coming back inside.

But he picked it up pretty quickly and he regularly used the bell to tell me he had to potty until I moved to a new place.

This method worked so fantastic while I lived at my old house I can't reccomend it enough. Just remember you need to be consistant in what ever you do otherwise the pup won't get the message.

Better late than never, thanks for the advice! I have a doggie bell that Darla never took to, will give it a go with Hugo.

If I could just stop him from peeing on his bed I would be very happy. I have washed the kitchen floor in natures miracle and all his bedding is in the wash with natures miracle. If he still pees on it after this he will have to go bed less. I hate him having to sleep on the cold, hard kitchen floor but I don't think I have another option. I don't want this peeing on soft furnishings to become a real hard habit to break.

don't worry about them sleeping on the floor. I have multiple dog beds for my puppers and the majority of the time, they choose the floor.

Same here. During the day, my dog mostly sleeps on the wood floor, completely ignoring her bed.

well, we all know that dogs should wear their beds- not sleep in them:winkgrin:
I do have to say- Jocu has flipped his bed in his carrier over on himself. You wouldn't think that there would be room to do that but he managed. it's too bad that it would be very hard to video or I'd try to recreate it:wink2:

 Bailey is not as bad as she used to be, but occasionally, I still find her sleeping underneath her bed or under her crate bed.

Aww thanks all, that has made me feel a lot better. I was worried I was doing him harm, but I guess I'm just fussing too much (as usual). Since removing his bed we are actually going in the right direction and doing very well. He enjoys going outside to wee now, even with all the snow, which he hated this time last week.

He's being very cheeky though by splitting his wees into as many as possible to get multiple treats!
