Is it normal for you to not meet your new puppy until day you bring it home?

Cranberry was 8 hours away- the breeder did meet me halfway when I got him. I did get lots of pix of him growing up and some videos. then when we picked Dixie up, we drove the 8 hours to get her and then a few more to stay with a friend overnight before coming home. Jocu was about 6 hours to the breeders place but she was going to a dog show in another state and was driving right past our exit on the Interstate so I drove about 5 minutes to get him. she also dropped off at least one other puppy on the way to that show- maybe two but I'm sure of one besides Jocu. Destin was only 2 hours away and I actually took all three shelties to meet him before we brought him home. He was 3 months then so don't worry about the age thing...
I did not put deposits on any of the dogs that I purchased- paid the full price when I picked them up. Two breeders sent me their contracts to look over before coming to get the dog so I knew what was expected. I guess communication is the key- tell the breeder what you are looking for and ask questions of them. there's a thread somewhere on this site about picking a breeder and what questions to ask- I'll see if I can find it.............

I'm going for it Chris! She responded to me this morning and said that getting her at 11 weeks was not a problem.

ghggp, you were so lucky that your breeder met your half way. I don't think this will happen for me. She has been breeding/showing dogs for 30 years and said that she has handlers do it now due to arthritis. We spoke last week for over an hour and I can tell she is certainly is a sheltie expert and on her FB she has had alot of dogs that win conformation.

Sharon, she did send me a video that is all I have seen so far. I hope she continues to send them and some pictures too. I have not seen any pictures of the parents, except the mother when she was a little puppy, which is on her website. I assume I should ask to see some of their pictures and at least meet the mother when I pick her up?

My nerves have calmed down and now I'm getting excited. She didn't give me her address and say how much for deposit. She just replied to my message that the dates to get her were fine and bye for now. Hopefully she'll get back to me soon.

Now I just have to come up with a name. Would like something that fits her. She's very gray/silvery and some small sections/stripes of black. She has a large white blaze on her face, which was most important to me, especially being a bi-blue.

Great! Nothing ventured nothing gained. We got our last puppy Asta years ago at a little over 10 weeks and it was no problem. Our other dogs have been 1, 1.5, 2 and 7, and all adjusted well. Start a new thread if you want name suggestions. I had thought of the name "Teal" as in teal blue for a blue dog (ya know, just in case a blue merle fell in my lap, LOL). Your pup sounds like my new boy Eli's mom, a beautiful powder blue.

How long will you be waiting till you meet her?

a blaze- that is something that I love. I picked Jocu because he had a blaze. all 5 shelties that I've had have had blazes:yes:

so do you want a name for her color or her personality?

This post has really turned out to a long busy one and many of you have been with me through this whole dilemma from the beginning. So now I have unexpected twist and almost embarrassed to post it as you may think I'm a nut-case.

I sent a message to the closer breeder explaining that I was offered a bi-blue girl and had chosen her. Well, as you may remember I think I had posted that my last conversation with her was that I would send her the deposit - then I got the email about the bi-blue girl.

Her text response to me was that our last conversation was that I was going to send a check and she turned away two potential buyers that wanted a boy. I immediately felt guilty and once again questioned if I was doing the right thing. I spoke to this breeder twice and really felt that we clicked and immediately liked her - although concerned about not being able to see him prior to getting him.

So I really wondered was the boy what was meant to be and was I distracted by the cute video of the bi-blue girl? I was comparing a video of a over 5 week old puppy playing with its litter mates to a picture of a 1-week old puppy sleeping curled up with its litter mates.

So I called her and even though her text sounded as though she was upset, she was just as nice as my previous conversations and told me about how she struggled with deciding between two dogs before going back and forth. She then told me to take my time and she would send me better pictures as he is now two weeks old. She also said that it looks as though he will have the one blue eye - which I had commented before I would really like.

A couple hours later I got several photos of him being held so I could see his size and full face view, side views, etc and he is so adorable. I fell in love. He has beautiful markings, more black than the girl, but beautiful just the same. He is a blue merle, not bi-blue but he has the wide white blaze that I wanted and black around his eyes, more black on one eye then the other, which is very cute. We talked again and she said she will continue to send more photos and videos going forward. I messaged the breeder to the girl and told her I was going with another breeder and she replied that was not a problem and wished me the best of luck.

I will be mailing the deposit tomorrow and I will be able to get him the 2nd week in July, at 8 weeks old. Now I need to think of a boys name. And Calliesmom, I think I'd like a name based on looks and coloring, personality would work also. I keep thinking the name Blaze. Not sure if I saw it somewhere on this forum, or a breeder's website, or maybe because I just keep thinking about the white blaze on these two dogs.

It sounds as if the magic is happening -- as if you were meant to have this boy! I just love blue merles -- I this the tan really adds dimension and character. Blaze is a superb name -- short, clear and good for calls and commands.

So nice to read that everything is falling into place :fl

Karen, you must not worry
- just start a new thread now the situation is different "now you are waiting for a little fur baby"

We absolute need to see some pictures of tiny Blaze (that's a sweet name)
- let us see some pictures and we will tell you whether we thought the name will fit.:lol::lol::lol:
