Is there a such thing as a ....?

Funny story that goes with this......

I was at our vet's in December, and there was a grey terrier puppy (looked like a pit bull mix of some sort) sitting there. My vet told me that it was his new puppy. I told him how cute it was and asked him if it was a rescue pit bull mix. No...he politely told me, it is a Cane Corso Italian Mastiff puppy. Oops :o Apparently, they are really expensive puppies :biggrin2:

Cane corso, Pressas, AmBulls, etc can be really hard to tell apart as pups. I really try hard to know all the breeds the rare ones are hard because I've only seen pictures of some. Last summer, the AKC gazette did a feature on the Norweign Buhund and what should walk in the the next day? a Norweign Buhund! I saw it in the lobby as I was going in a room and stop short and asked if that was what it was. Owner was blown away. Instant gold star points.:biggrin2:

PS I have ever seen a Dandie Dinmont outside of a show ring.

Yeah, I've seen that 'toy' sheltie association. As I recall, they give out championships based on a picture alone. What a joke!
That is a BIG reason I take offense to the mini sheltie comment I often get about my 13" girls. It gets a bit of a twitch going, knowing what I know about that foolish registry, when people refer to mine as mini shelties.
What gets me are the idiots who sit there and confidently tell their friends 'Oh, you see that dog over there? Yeah, that's a BC/Aussie/Mini Aussie/Collie(whatever).'
As if they really know what they're talking about. :rolleyes2:
I believe we have one of those 'toy' breeders at the agility trials in Indiana. She shows up with a flock of 10-11" shelties :/

as a counter offensive tactic if those people who call your dog mini collie have a dog of their own we should start telling "oh what a ..../ some absolutely ridiculous breed/ you have...
it does not bother me at the least as I have hard time differentiating many breeds..
what bothered me a great deal when some mo...n came to me at the pooch park and started talking" oh you have a Sheltie? He is big, do you know he is going to be big? he is going to be large for Sheltie..." as if I am clueless fool and know nothing about MY dog...

Bailey's obedience teacher was telling me that there are breeders that are trying to breed undersized shelties for agility. Bailey is small. A little under 13 inches, so she asked where I got her from. Bailey is from a show dog breeder, but was sold as a pet, because she would be too small to show. So, I get the "is she a mini?" a lot! They never say mini-what, so I'm not sure if they mean sheltie or collie. Most likely collie. Doesn't bother me. I'm just happy they're interested in her and explain she's a sheltie and there's no such thing as a mini.

Yeah I get that alot with Ember when they know what she is. Oh is she a mini sheltie? That bothers me more than mini collie. They also ask where I got her because they are looking for people breeding mini shelties. I explain she wasn't bred to be small it just happened. Both her parents are at or near 16". Good breeders don't bred for something outside the standard.

I agree with you...I'm more bothered by the mini-Sheltie comment than the mini-Collie comment. Mini-Collie comments existed long before the "designer-dog" syndrome hit. Just from people who did not know better.

Now we are seeing "mini-Shelties" touted as if they are legitimate breeds. I get insane every time I see this. Next we'll be seeing Teacup Shelties!:mad:

"Miniature Collie" and "Little Lassie" bug the be-jeebers out of me!!!! I hate it when someone sees 'Gus for the first time and says, and I quote, "Look at the little Lassie, isn't she cute. Is she a Miniature Collie?" I usually try to take a deep breath, count to 10 and reply to them, "Yes, I think HE'S gorgeous. HIS name is Aonghus and HE is a Shetland Sheepdog." 9 times out of 10 they still go off saying that SHE is a beautiful "Little Lassie" and I quietly (and under my breath) go off my rocker!!!!:uhoh:Grrrrrrr
