Keep a dogtrainingjournal?

Well, one of the things I am going to do 2012 is to keep a trainingjournal.
Does anyone here write about their training (on a regular basis, after each training)? What do you write?
I have a problem with structuring the journal. It has to be simple so it doesn't take a lot of time, but it has to be enough advanced so it helps to make the training go forward.
I don't know if I want to log each moment individual or to log day after day.

Any thoughts?

(I hope that you "get the message", I'm from Sweden so it is a bit awkward to write in a different language)

I only have 1 sheltie puppy that I'm training right now but I do keep a training journal so when something doesn't work I can find out what really went wrong. The way I do it is during the first session for a new command, I try to record every step taken to make the puppy do the wanted command. Next time the same command is reviewed, I simply record how many tries did it take before the puppy responds and any corrections made to make the command work.

One of my goals for 2012 is to keep a journal over Pixies training. I will write about every trainingpass. What we have done, how it went and things to think about. I also write what kind of reward I have used.

Susan Garrett put record keeping as a must do. I am still pretty lousy as it but am working in right direction.
I try to have several less than 5 minute training sessions and same as you document, what we were working, what response I got, treats I used etc. Short.

I can get a little obsessed with journal keeping, so I've tried to keep up with our training on my blog. It helps keep down the organization OCD that I have, and still allows things to be organized by date or training item.

It's not the best method, but for now it works for me.

I also keep track of some training on my blog, but I often train in other cities so when I get my hands on a computer I have forgotten everything :wink2:
The last few days I have written about each training. Very good! It doesn't take to long and I really hope that I will keep up with the writing.

In spite of my good intentions of keeping to a plan, I often don't. I have a spiral bound mini notebook. I have all the obedience exercises I want and a breakdown of the skills I need in the progression I want.

however, I set out to train a, b, c... my dog isn't doing well with a.step 2... so out the window goes everything else and we work on perfecting that little piece that day!

In a perfect world, I would be a perfect dog trainer... but I am really far from perfect - barely competent some days...

I haven't been keeping a training journal but the thread I have done on Tinsel's journey has been helpful in seeing how far he has come. Really helps when you are dealing with some training issue that is driving you crazy. BTW, Susan Garrett lives 20 minutes from me. Wish she did training classes at her "Say Yes" facility but alas, she only does camps and seminars.
