Kidney Issues

It's been about 20+ days now. We are giving Miko about 1/4 canned to mix with the power supplement, VP, and omega-3 and the rest is dry. Man that dog just starves for it. Which reminds me, I need to weigh him to be sure he's not losing weight (I think he's getting about twice the amount of food as before, but the calories are about the same, lol).

Next Friday we'll go in to get his blood tested again. This time, it'll be a fasting blood test. I guess I should try and catch his urine. Maybe I should ask the vet for some of those plastic containers. Much better than me trying to catch it in a KFC bowl. LOL.

If his numbers are back to "normal", I'm going to start looking into non-prescription food for now, and still use the supplements.

BTW, for anyone following. I was reading that flaxseed is basically omega-6 and that type of omega isn't good for kidneys (only omega-3 is good). There's a lot of flaxseeds in VP. Along with another item in the supplement that's not good, so I may have to stop it. It's amazing how much stuff the kidneys do NOT like. lol. Maybe I should eat better, lol.

However, on the upside for my old man, he got a can of Tripett (beef tripe) today to supp his food. And freeze-dried tripe for treats (since he cant' have a lot of anything). They're stinky which means they'll love it.

I'll let you know next week how his numbers look. Cross your fingers they're back to "normal".

Re: Catching the Urine

We keep a special ladle to catch Mally's urine if we have to bring it in to the vet's. (boy dog's urine is easier to catch than girl's) (if we put that ladle under there real fast once he starts to go pee he doesn't even know we are catching it and will continue going!!

PS Keeping Miko in my prayers

Hope all goes well for Miko's. I was just reading about a kidney diet for dogs in a magazine at B & N a company that makes dog food to meet your needs.

I know there's a local place by me that does it, from what I read, it's "affordable". I'm not sure if I want a company that is kinda anti-raw though. They believe that cooking is when you get all nutrients and stuff. I know it depends on what you're cooking if you get all nutrients or if you lose it all, so that bothers me a bit.

Anyhow. Went in for Miko's blood test. I titered him for DHPP. And yup, it's about double the price for the vacc's (I vacc'd Koji too today). Let's hope I don't have to go back and get him vacc'd now. LOL. Oh well. I figure the less things going on/in his body, the better. Especially at his age. I was happy that the vet said he's fine with titering both of them if that's what I want.

So, depending on who calls me, will probably depend on when I get Miko's blood test. My regular vet isn't in on Sat's, but the vet that's been handling Miko's kidney issues is.

I hope I don't have to do blood testing too often. At $125, I definitely would have to cut out agility. Today's bill.....a whopping $358. :( I'm going to call my mom and thank her. Koji's part is taken care of (as I save money yearly for vacc's), but Miko's bill was most of it. Yikes. Well, I always said, "here's my credit card for Miko, it's got a $25k limit". Let's hope I don't need to go there, because I'm broke enough.

I'll keep everyone posted. All I do is thank everyday that Miko is basically himself. I'm going to start looking more into raw and see where I can go from there. Or the food from the place I spoke about above. Time to do some "research" into pricing. I don't have freezer space, so it may cost a bit more than normal.

With my luck, I'd use the ladel to serve at a dinner party. :eek2:

And darnit, I forgot to ask them for those little containers. Oh well.

And lastly, with all that bit about the rescue dog that the shelter couldn't find the microchip, I asked my vet to scan them. I'm surprised at how long it took to find it, but yay, both were found pretty easily.

I also need to update Koji's info asap. I just realized how much of it was incorrect.
