Kidney program from holistic vet

In shelties or collies with MDR1 Mutations , it doesn't cause issues at the dose in Heartgard. Nor do the drugs that make up Interceptor, Revoltution, Proheart and Advantage Multi.

They ALL cause issues at higher doses in MDR1 dogs. Ivermectin was the first drug discovered and that is why it is the best know but it is not the only drug. For the full list of drugs see here.

I use heartgard. No issues. I see no need to change. In my mind the risk is the same for all heartworm meds-one not more risky than the others. But I encourage everyone to do what they are comfortable with. But know the facts. They are all a concern at higher doses.

Thanks again for posting the facts. It is helpful to have someone in the field post these links for us all.

I personally won't use Heartgard but that is because I have had multiple Vets at different offices say that they won't even sell it because they do not think that it works well enough. I guess even vets have their own opinions about what works and what doesn't. But again, it is very helpful to have all of the facts. Thanks!

Hello again. After I re-read my lengthy post of yesterday, I wasn't sure if I ever mentioned that our dog Holly has experienced a vast improvement under this list of things; I was afraid it might have looked like we implemented a long list of pills, powders and injections just to keep a sick dog alive. So today, I wanted to add that the dog is back to her old, normal self - chasing cars (only while on a leash :), barking, running, begging, playing. I was sitting here thinking - omigosh what if people are out there reading my post and thinking I am just force feeding & giving fluids while the dog is not improving so I thought I had better clarify things in case anyone thought I was goofy :) It took 1 1/2 to 2 weeks of home fluids & force feedings, along with the other products, and then one day she suddenly seemed improved and it has been better each day since. She started eating on her own when I tempted her with pan seared Nature's Menu Beef patties then gradually got to eating the Merrick BG Chicken canned food. I have no idea how long it will last, but as I've told Dawn, I am learning to appreciate each day not knowing if the next will be as good!

It's great to read that she is doing so much better and no I didn't think that you were doing that, I hope no one else did either. I love to see when something is working for one dog. It can always give hope to someone else!

What great information you have shared with us. I need to give that to a friend who's dog is in kidney failure.
I use intercepter for Zak and use heartguard for Maggie.

Nobody said anything, but I thought I maybe should have written something about the outcome just in case anyone was wondering :)

Janice i don't think anyone here would consider you crazy. We all love our pets dearly and would do whatever we could to get them healthy and feeling well again like you have. So glad she is feeling so well.

waiting hoping wishing

thank you so much for the information!! i am sitting home waiting for hours for a call from the vet to see if they were able to save my baby by getting her numbers down, the only number I remember hearing was I think phosphorus was 4 maybe? it seems like this vet just wants to euthanize her, she says she is not in pain but she is 'very uncomfortable' and 'feels really awful' i told her she was nipping at her 'brother' just yesterday and barking and she has appetite (she just could not hold anything down yesterday) so there was no way I was going to let them put her down without even trying something, she deserves more than that!!! i wish we had a hollistic vet here :((( I am so scared my baby is going to die, just want her home so I can hug her ..if a dog still has appetite and can pee/poop that gives me hope, maybe I am wrong but I don't think so.

any feedback would help please, i'm just in hell right now

Fluids seem to be something I've heard thats really important. Can you find a vet that might let you give them at home? Our dog seemed to get a little better after a couple weeks of fluids. My thoughts are with you, I know how horrible the worrying is :(
