In shelties or collies with MDR1 Mutations , it doesn't cause issues at the dose in Heartgard. Nor do the drugs that make up Interceptor, Revoltution, Proheart and Advantage Multi.
They ALL cause issues at higher doses in MDR1 dogs. Ivermectin was the first drug discovered and that is why it is the best know but it is not the only drug. For the full list of drugs see here.

I use heartgard. No issues. I see no need to change. In my mind the risk is the same for all heartworm meds-one not more risky than the others. But I encourage everyone to do what they are comfortable with. But know the facts. They are all a concern at higher doses.
Thanks again for posting the facts. It is helpful to have someone in the field post these links for us all.
I personally won't use Heartgard but that is because I have had multiple Vets at different offices say that they won't even sell it because they do not think that it works well enough. I guess even vets have their own opinions about what works and what doesn't. But again, it is very helpful to have all of the facts. Thanks!
( I am so scared my baby is going to die, just want her home so I can hug her ..if a dog still has appetite and can pee/poop that gives me hope, maybe I am wrong but I don't think so.
