Leash training hilarious.

So, little Miss Willow has been wearing her harness without complaint. She is okay with dragging the leash about but don't pick it up unless you want a real-life cartoon show scene. Today we tried walkies in the back yard. The harness went on without complaint. The leash was clipped on the harness to drag behind. That was okay too.

However, the minute I picked up the loose end of the leash things went south in a hurry. She immediately tried to run rings around me. She didn't bark, didn't complain, she just ran around me like a whirling dervish. I'm trying to get her to stop with a treat but she's having a blast. I did manage to get her attention with a sit and a treat in a couple of minutes. Then we walked two steps, sit and treat, walk two steps, sit and treat. This ought to be an interesting skill to teach her. I've never had a puppy do that and I have to say it's very difficult to train a puppy when you can't stop laughing at them.

As I look at her snoozing in her bed, I can see she's running in her dreams. She's probably reliving the fun times with dad and the leash.

If you got two steps, you're ahead of the game. I've had some take a week to figure out that the point of the exercise is to WALK alongside their human when the snake is on them. It's way more fun to play tug with it or lie down or tie up the aforementioned human. Extra points for tripping one! Treats help. Keep them coming! :yes:

Yet another entertaining post of Miss Willow and her human family!

I swear you could create a comic strip cartoon character of her. All her puppy escapades gives you fun material to share! Marmaduke has nothing on little Miss Willow!

Then again, it is your totally engaging story telling skills that make us all feel like we were there witnessing the whole thing right along with you!

Keep up the good work Willow! We so enjoy you and how you keep your human family on their toes!

Love the idea of peanut butter on a spoon idea! I was lucky as Liam picked up walking on a leash immediately.

I confess that I don't even remember teaching any of the shelties to walk on a leash. I have vague memories of teaching them how to heel but just walking on the leash- not so much. but I'm sure that they were on a leash from the day that they came home......

Awwhh leash training.....Shelby used to chew right through her leash. We went through so many of them. And she was very sneaky and quick. All of a suddenly you would realize the leash was chewed through.

I did use peanut butter on a wodden spoon to teacher to walk on leash

When he was a puppy (and still sometimes now) Oberon would grab the leash in the middle, while he had it on. We called him 'the self-walking dog" because he seemed to think he had to hold both ends of the leash and he could walk himself.

:lol::lol:
Like Calliesmom - I have never had trouble with the leash, just put it on and ready for a little walk

Yes garden = fun with dad :wink2:
Think it will be different when you and little Miss Willow come outside the garden.

So be ready with treats and do not pull the leash so you just have to see - Miss Willow with her proud dad:biggrin2:
