Limited Registration question

My opinon - there is nothing wrong with breeding. We need breeders. If there were no breeders we wouldn't have shelties. I just don't like it when people:

1. Take advantage of misinformed people (like me)
2. Breed dogs they know should not be bred
3. Do it only for money or attention
4. Don't groom their shelties (brushing their fur, not allowing their fur to grow, matted shelties, shelties with bad teeth, ect.)
5. Hold off on vet care for their breeding shelties for various reasons
6. Decide that since you can't test for everything that it is ok to just not test at all
7. Do back to back breeding
8. Use a pedigree to draw in more money. Like I've seen in the local newspaper "Dog has champion in bloodline!"
9. Offer a twofer. I've seen this as well. Like buy two puppies get one free. That was in the paper. I can't believe they printed it!

There are more, but I think you get the idea.

My dogs are adorable (I'm biased :biggrin2:), but I have no business breeding them. Smudge got the old snip 'n clip several months ago. Fluffy's getting the old heave ho when she gets old enough.

I have a hard time looking at your username. My name is Jessica, and my last name starts with an R!

I definitly agree with you, i just wanted to point out that every breeder started out somewhere. It is how you choose to proceed that seperates good breeders from the bad.

Not all BYB's are bad breeders. I got my Bailey from a BYB, she only had 2 bitches and I classify her as a BYB because I'd never heard of her in this area, she doesn't have a fancy website, and doesn't charge $800 for a pet puppy! I basically found her through the local newspaper classifieds. She showed me a good picture of my pup's sire, had me meet his dam (who was DELIGHTFUL--very sweet girl), and I got to see first hand that the pups were hand raised in a nice big clean puppy pen in her kitchen.

He does have AKC papers and was on limited registration. He is a nice pet quality and has no birth defects, and was healthy, worm free, flea free, clean, and has turned out to be quite the handsome dude with a FANTASTIC temperament, just like his mommy. I'm quite happy with my BYB Sheltie!!

8 months old here. He's now 1 year old and his coat is just BEAUTIFUL, I need to take more up to date pictures. Just wanted to say that not all BYB's are bad & irresponsible. I'd send any one of my friends looking for a nice pet Sheltie back to her in a heartbeat!

Here's what happens when you stick two random dogs together and let them go at it:

http://sheltieforums.com/picture.php?albumid=132&pictureid=1619

Back yard breeders play with fire in more ways than one. My first sheltie was from a BYB when I was in junior high/high school. His name was Gizmo. No health problems and no genetic problems to report. My second sheltie was the first sheltie I had that was "mine". His name is Smudge. I didn't know it at the time, but he came from a puppy mill. That picture above is what can happen. He has a hereditary condition that will stay with him for the rest of his life. I have to be very careful with everything I do, because odd things can stress a dog out. There is no cure for it. It gets better, but it can come back without warning. There are also small flare ups that pop up every now and then.

Not every dog from a byb or puppy mill will have a genetic diease. I pray they don't. I don't want anybody's pet to get sick. You are playing Russian roulette when you buy a dog from these types of people. The trigger got pulled and I got red mange. You may get lucky. You may not.

Why take the chance?

I agree. I don't think all BYB's are bad. I think there are many different types of BYB. There are the ones who think they're going to make a quick buck, ones who think their dogs are cute and it would be fun to mate them, and then there are ones, who may have been breeding for years and do get the proper testing, but just don't show their dogs. I think that most BYB's do love and care for their dogs, but just might not have the "improving the breed" goal in mind.

Puppy mills on the other hand are always bad! There are no different types. Pet stores and puppy mills are never good.

The trouble with those is that they are very sneaky. It is so easy to get tricked. Then by the time you realize what happened it's too late. :( Puppy mills are not just sold in stores, by the way. They have several different methods. I actually went to her house and didn't realize what was going on. I thought she had the other dogs in cages (I thought they were crates! :() because she was showing me the puppies. The adult shelties were in a fenced in area behind her house, probably because she either didn't want to buy bigger cages (most of the other dog breeds were smaller ones, like min pins, ect.) or because she wanted the shelties out to show me. None of the dogs were barking. I was online looking for a place to do agility with Smudge, and this is what I found instead:

http://www.pupchannel.com/

After I wrote to them and complained with pictures and a vet's phone number they took her name off the front page. The link is still there, but it is hidden pretty good. The "rescue" page where they have rescues listed is puppies from their own puppy mill.

They make you feel so stupid.

That was my point as well. You just said it better than I.

And personally, I would not buy from a BYB because tracing the pedigree is virtually impossible. But buying from a show breeder is no guarantee either, but at least you know they are trying to do the best they can.
