liver disease

Seamus

Abby's Dad,

Thank you so much. Yes, Seamus is on denamarin as well.

The diet Dr. Dodds, gave to me also includes zucchini, yellow squash, and scrambled eggs. Switch off and on with the veggies as long as the fur kids are tolerating it well. My doggies are going to stay on this diet for, "furever."

See that, good news gave me some of my sense of humor back.

anti biotics and pro biotics

Dr. Jean Dodds said that to put back the good bacteria that is distroyed by anti biotics, you should take the liquid from the top of an unpasturized container of yogurt and put it into the dogs food.

So sorry to hear about your little Sheltie's liver problems. Our 10-year-old's problem wasn't caught until there is nothing we can do. She needs amino acids (eggs are the best source). You have my hopes and prayers for you.

Our prayers are with you and Seamus,
Have a great day tomorrow as well as the next and the next forever
Sylvia & our 4 shelties.

Dani,

You will never guess, Dr. Dodds took the time to gve me a diet for Seamus. I am so happy to have all this input.
Today Seamus bounded out the door to jump in the snow.
Although his back legs have been compromised by the prednisone he took in the summer his energy was such that although stiff, he was outside giving it his best shot.

Best
Kate

So happy to hear this. I will keep Seamus in my prayers. Glad to hear Seamus bounded out the door to have a great time in the snow. Sounds like he is feeling stronger!!! Yeah, Seamus!

Trevor's Liver Diet

Sorry for the delay in getting Trevor's diet. I was having trouble finding one of the last ones he was on.

He went through several revisions, but he was on this basic diet for a little over two years.

I removed references to his medications, as I didn't think it was relevant to the discussion. This diet was based on the book I mentioned earlier & reviewed by a nutritionist. (She actually switched a dog specific vitamin I had been feeding with the Centrum version.)

(Trevor averaged about 37 lbs & was a slightly over-sized Sheltie.)

I know we made a few changes at the end...he had previously been on tofu (bletch!) but he got sick of it & we switched to boiled chicken. (I don't blame him!) His liver values did the best when on the tofu. These servings were measured accurately & fed at equal intervals. (It is recommended to feed liver disease dogs frequent smaller meals, as it is easier for their system to process.)

Trevor had severe food allergies, so his diet choices (& some supplements) were pretty limited...and he didn't like peas or green beans.)

Food: Fed 4x a day:
• 1 cup cooked sweet potato or organic pasta
• 1/3 cup mixed organic vegetables (mix of any 3 of the following: carrots, organic green & yellow squash, organic broccoli, organic celery) steamed.
• 10g organic chicken or turkey protein.
Each meal sprinkled with ¼ tsp Prozyme

Supplements:
Taurine: 500mg 1x day
L-Carnitine: 500mg 2x day
Caltrate + D: 2 x day.
Centrum Performance: 1x day.
Vitamin E: 200mg x1day
Super Milk Thistle Capsules: 2x day
Fish oil: 1000mg 1x daysplit into two meals.

Trevor's diet

Hi Kelly, your diet info is appreciated.

Seamus is having good days, I think the diet is wonderful although he would prefer some beef. It is practically the same diet that Dr. Dodds recommended.

Reading up on gall bladder disease I was encouraged to know that it can be reversed. Also since the liver is a regenerative organ, if his gall bladder starts healing, well anything is possible.

best,
Kate
