looking for a cool martingale

NEVER walk your new Sheltie using a regular collar. Regular collars are for ID tags only. A dog can easily back out of a regular collar if frightened. Please use a slip collar or mountain collar when your dog is on a leash. This type of collar gets tighter as it is pulled on, so it cannot be slipped off.

I stop having any type of collar on Dylan long time ago. No one can see if he is wearing a collar or not because of his fur. I have a slip lead that I just puts on him everytime we go out. In the house, he doesn't wear anything.

also so true about shelties slipping their collars. my Skyler did that once when he was 6 months old. we was going for a walk and a train went by scaring him he pulled out of his collar and RAN. he wouldnt come at all when I called, luckily we was just down the road from home. he ran to our house and sat by the gate. now I like to walk them with slip leads on to prevent anything like that from happening again!
 
Mine only wear collars when they are outside or on walks. Martingales can actually be dangerous to leave on a dog unattended. I honestly think that Ruckus looks like he has more fur when he is not wearing a collar. He gets his fur rubbed from having a collar on and i just dont like how it wears a pattern in his ruff.
 
I'm looking at the martingales now too. Bacca only slipped his collar once, but it was enough to put a scare into me. I didn't know about the martingales until I read this thread.

I suspect that with the martingale, he can wear it looser than a normal buckle collar, therefore, won't mat his ruff as much. Though I still have him in a "baby" collar - not as heavy or wide.

I've seen two types....one that has abit of chain and another that it all fabric.

Suggestions as to which is preferable?

I prefer a martingale for the same reason, so that Sadie can't slip her head out of her collar. I have one with a chain and will probably stay with it. My thought is that it can probably tighten faster than one made entirely of fabric. The draw back to to the one with the chain is that its starting to rust a little. Perhaps mine is just a cheap one though, I've never seen a choke chain rust before.

Not sure that a martingale will help much in terms of not flattening out the rough, a round collar is still best for that. Sadie's martingale is usually taken off when we're not out for a walk.
