Lyme?

Smudge got tapeworms once, and I blame a lot of that on me applying his Advantage wrong. So no more Advantage and I switched to Comforits for fleas.

I've had a couple of girls with tapes, both were shipped from Hawaii. They have no ticks in Hawaii, but tons of fleas. They also don't use Advantage because *shocker* it doesn't work!

Yes it mostly in the North East. Amazing I remember working in the early 90's at a camp on the RI/CT border and each year the incidence was worse with lyme cases...I remember having a few cases the first few years, and by the time I left 10 years later it seemed that everyone was coming down with it!! They are nasty little suckers!
And I found a new tool to aid in the tick hunt...this past week I was washing and drying my girl who was out in a wooded area for a week so I washed and than blew dry her with my metro dryer and viola I could see her skin with the force of the dryer and did her in lines to see if could spot any little stow-aways!!!

Too bad you weren't on the forums back then to tell me. :wink2: Could have saved me a vet bill and Smudge some itchyness!

Heehee, you should have seen me with the first girl. I was sooo grossed out. I called my vet, and they made me bring them the worm. The second one, I just bummed some Drontal. It was gross.

And the ironic thing is that the same pesticide the locals won't use because it doesn't work is the same pesticide quarantine requires be applied by a vet no more than ten days before arrival in Hawaii. Argh.

shooot... looks like i'm in the infected area.. i think :S i have never had any ticks on any of my dogs i dunno maybe i was just lucky but we also are careful about where they are, they are either in the yard or walking on the road... the field i would never go into theres too many creepy crawlies.. and YIKES spiders yuck

I collected a worm sample in a ziploc bag (of course the worm dried out before I got to the vet) and took a picture of the worm.

Not my finest hour.

Most of the studies show the efficacy rate of tick preventatives such as frontline and advantix is 98%. So if your dog comes into contact with 100 ticks, 2 will make it onto the dog and possible attach. So no it is not 100%. It is very important to check your dog over daily after outings. A lady at the training school I go to wa telling me she went tracking with her dog a week ago and after they were done she ran her hand though her shelties coat and came away with a handful of ticks easily 30-40 ticks crawling on the dog. She did not use any preventative. So is it not working or do you have tons of ticks present. I have found 6 ticks on me(attached:dead:) this year so far and 1 on Justice, 3 on Diva and 0 on Ember and I'm not crashing though the brushes like they are. I use frontline on my dogs.

Lyme is also very common is the Minnesota/Wisconsin River valley as well as the east coast. Deer ticks carry it and are very small and hard to see unless engored. So it is really hard to find them on daily checks. There is several tick borne diseases carried by all types of ticks. They are just nasty creatures.

I am terrified of ticks and lyme disease. Thankfully, they're not prevalent where I live. In the 20 years I have owned dogs, I found 1 tick.

I take Bailey to a lot more parks and events than I did with any other dog, So I'm nervous. I run my hands through her fur whenever we come back from the park. I'm going to give her a bath, right after we come home from the Northeast meet up. It'll be much easier to check for ticks that way.

I absolutely despise ticks and they gross me out beyond belief. I'm after my hubby to keep the grass trimmed and Russ with the weedeating as when the grass is cut I don't find ticks on the dogs, when the grass gets up a bit I'll find a few. The ticks are dog ticks and usually attach on their face and ears...still hard to find in all that fur and my shelties are not the fuzziest of the breed. Brushing them outdoors and doing a thorough ear/face check every night is the rule during tick season. So far this year I've taken 2 off Angus (:() one off Sasha, three from Emma and two from Newton. Somehow Indy and Figaro have escaped so far. I've also gotten rid of three that were crawling on me, and one on Alan.

I've been reading all these posts about shelties getting lyme and i am terrified now! our vet gave Riley a dose of revolution (kill sticks fleas, and other things can;t remember right now) but is that good enough to prevent lyme? I mean if your dog is given protection against ticks and fleas does that mean they get killed on contact or is there still a risk?? i'm so confused... i definitely will be asking the vet but still just wondering.

I have Vash on Frontline Plus...and last week I pulled a Lone Star tick off of him. And let me tell you he was very unhappy about the whole thing.

Frontline and other meds offer a layer of protection, if you don't apply the product right, if your dog goes to swim, if some how it ends up wiping off..the layer of protection is gone.

I suspect I washed the front line off when I gave Vash a bath due to his potty troubles.

You should always check your pet for ticks, at least once a day. When I bring Vash in from a walk I sit down and tickle him all over, he thinks it's a game but I'm rubbing my hands all over his body looking for ticks.

If I find an unusual bump or the like i immediately start looking at it.

I too thought frontline would protect my pup but after that lone star tick I realized that i couldn't.

Right now I use an herbal spray with peppermint & clove oil as a tick deturrant, front line plus, and every 2 weeks or so Vash gets a flea/tick bath. I wash all his bedding and then spray the herbal stuff on that too.

Besides that I'm protecting my home against ticks as well. I know my pup is pretty well protected, but the last thing I want to do is wake up one night with a tick on my nose. Yard sprays by adams, I sprinkle food grade diatomacious earth on the carpets (not harmful for humans/pets but it will kill almost any insect in a day or less because it cuts into their exoskeleton and makes them dehydrate).

Everyone seems to talk about Lyme but there are a number of other illnesses which are tick borne that could make both you and your pet very ill.

The key is to check your pet every day , and if you find a tick remove it/preserve it in alchol in case there are symptoms of a disease like Lyme.

The faster you get treatment for your pet or yourself when it comes to lyme the better.
