I've been reading all these posts about shelties getting lyme and i am terrified now! our vet gave Riley a dose of revolution (kill sticks fleas, and other things can;t remember right now) but is that good enough to prevent lyme? I mean if your dog is given protection against ticks and fleas does that mean they get killed on contact or is there still a risk?? i'm so confused... i definitely will be asking the vet but still just wondering.
I have Vash on Frontline Plus...and last week I pulled a Lone Star tick off of him. And let me tell you he was very unhappy about the whole thing.
Frontline and other meds offer a layer of protection, if you don't apply the product right, if your dog goes to swim, if some how it ends up wiping off..the layer of protection is gone.
I suspect I washed the front line off when I gave Vash a bath due to his potty troubles.
You should always check your pet for ticks, at least once a day. When I bring Vash in from a walk I sit down and tickle him all over, he thinks it's a game but I'm rubbing my hands all over his body looking for ticks.
If I find an unusual bump or the like i immediately start looking at it.
I too thought frontline would protect my pup but after that lone star tick I realized that i couldn't.
Right now I use an herbal spray with peppermint & clove oil as a tick deturrant, front line plus, and every 2 weeks or so Vash gets a flea/tick bath. I wash all his bedding and then spray the herbal stuff on that too.
Besides that I'm protecting my home against ticks as well. I know my pup is pretty well protected, but the last thing I want to do is wake up one night with a tick on my nose. Yard sprays by adams, I sprinkle food grade diatomacious earth on the carpets (not harmful for humans/pets but it will kill almost any insect in a day or less because it cuts into their exoskeleton and makes them dehydrate).
Everyone seems to talk about Lyme but there are a number of other illnesses which are tick borne that could make both you and your pet very ill.
The key is to check your pet every day , and if you find a tick remove it/preserve it in alchol in case there are symptoms of a disease like Lyme.
The faster you get treatment for your pet or yourself when it comes to lyme the better.
